Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration Physician (Regular Ft)-Chief of Surgery in Wichita, Kansas

Summary The Chief of Surgery directs all clinical and administrative activities of the Surgery Service of the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center (RJDVAMC), a complexity level 2 primary and secondary care facility with 81 beds serving 30,000 Veterans throughout a 59-county radius. RJDVAMC is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology. Responsibilities The Chief of Surgery develops, implements, and maintains currently accepted surgery practices at the RJDVAMC. In addition to core clinical duties expected of Surgeons, the ACOS Surgery has clinical and administrative oversight of all Surgeons and mid-levels in Surgery Service and is responsible for development and presentation of the budgetary and resource requirements of the service. The Chief of Surgery is fully responsible to the Medical Center Chief of Staff for clinical and administrative matters concerning the surgery service. Formulate and recommend plans for a comprehensive surgery program. Develop the requirements of staff, facility infrastructure, equipment, and supplies needed to support the surgery service, utilizing necessary reviews and controls. Assume responsibility for carrying out the goals, objectives, plans and policies established by the Medical Center Director and VA Heartland Network. Provide leadership and accountability for all Surgery operations, assuring support of the mission and values of the RJDVAMC. Work collaboratively with the facility Chief of Anesthesiology and other Hospital Service Chiefs to expand and/or enhance surgery service procedures offered at RJDVAMC. Utilize data about target population and available resources, formulate strategic short term and long-range plans and goals for the service. Formulate and execute an annual budget for all surgery operations. Complete performance evaluations of subordinate clinical managers and administrative staff. The Chief is expected to have the skill set to interact positively with the Surgery staff, other Service Chiefs, and the Medical Center's Executive Leadership Team to promote excellence in an academic environment. The Chief ensures positive customer relations, is committed to continuously improving management systems, and strives to have the Surgical Service and facility an employer of choice for all professionals and related staff. Work Schedule: 0700-1530 Monday - Friday (with rotating on call coverage) Financial Disclosure Report: Required Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP): Authorized This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program. To participate in the program, you must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA Policy 1021 and submit your application within four months of appointment. The final award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical requirements outlined below. Preferred Experience: Previous management experience, Board Certification Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Must be able to physically and mentally perform the duties of Physician, under normal and emergent conditions. Moderate lifting 15-44 lbs and over with assistive devices, heavy carrying of 15-44 lbs and over with assistive devices; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers, both hands required, walking or standing up to 4 hours per day; repeated bending up to 1-2 hours per day; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination; near vision correctable; hearing aid permitted.
