UnityPoint Health Director of Financial Infrastructure and Processes in West Des Moines, Iowa

Director of Financial Infrastructure and Processes is responsible for overseeing the development and maintenance of core financial systems supporting the organization’s financial planning and accounting functions. Position makes decisions around how to most effectively optimize technology to facilitate efficient functional performance and directs a team to operationalize best practice performance. Designs all core financial processes to allow for data driven decision making, including all financial data that influences strategy and operations. Establishes education and training to effectuate a robust level of financial acumen across leaders of the organization. Driving transformation, directing multiple complex projects and processes, and leading through change are critical traits necessary for this position to successfully mature our infrastructure and processes. This role will report to the Executive Director of Finance and will have a high-level of visibility across the organization.

Financial Infrastructure

  • Oversees budgeting and planning software tools, which are not yet to a state of maturity, and directs focus on efforts to optimize and improve the functionality and end user experience

  • Decision-maker around set-up and operation of core financial systems technology, enabling the entire FP&A and accounting processes

  • Works closely with key stakeholders to shape and guide the ongoing development of technology tools

  • Influences the organizational roadmap related to financial technology, including selection of technology systems and timing of implementations and upgrades

  • Maintains relationships with key vendor contacts to influence financial system design decisions and ensure achievement of optimal set up and utilization

  • Recommends and helps design changes to systems, including configuration changes, interfaces, and level of integration between systems

  • Works directly with Executive Director to exercise the overall vision and goals of the department

  • Performs special projects, as requested, for the Executive Director of Finance.

Financial Processes

  • Responsibility for directing multiple projects and creating clarity and definition in complex processes

  • Maintains a strong change management orientation to drive best practices, and in some cases, re-engineering of current business processes

  • Establishes and maintains core financial processes supporting effective decision making

  • Defines and establishes reporting packages and data elements necessary for organizational leadership to effectively manage the business

  • Develops intelligently designed chart of accounts and department structure to facilitate robust reporting across multiple dimensions

  • Provides financial input into cost accounting process to support the organization in identifying costs and utilization of providing care to patients by service line, physician, payor, population segment and other defined aggregations, as needed, for business plans and other analysis.

  • Provides guidance and education in core financial processes and concepts to clinical and operational leaders across the organization

  • Constructs financial processes to ensure a direct linkage between overall organizational goals, KPIs, and the measures that will drive improved performance

Leadership and Management

  • Develops internal talent in a consistent manner to effectively manage financial systems

  • Directs the supervision of staff, including training, process and procedures, and performance management

  • Motivates and mentors team to maintain the highest level of performance

  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining staff work assignments and accountabilities

  • Ensures metrics and goals are executed


  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field


  • Minimum 10 years of experience in financial planning, budgeting, analytics, and accounting related fields

  • Minimum five years of experience managing financial systems technology, including design and system functions

  • Experienced in project management and process design, including business process re-engineering

  • Minimum five years of experience managing direct reports

  • At least two years of experience in key leadership roles, overseeing major functions and processes beyond entry level management

  • Proven ability to influence and partner without direct reporting relationships

  • Proven ability to effectively develop a high performing team of professionals
