About L3Harris Integrated Aerospace Systems

The Integrated Aerospace Systems (IAS) business, located in Waco, TX, is focused on missionization, modification and MRO activities for a wide range of commercial and military aircraft. The IAS site employs a large engineering and manufacturing staff which provides a completely vertically integrated and full lifecycle capability to its customers. The IAS division is part of the Aviation Services Sector headquartered in Plano, TX.

The Role

The Integrated Aerospace Systems (IAS) Director, Engineering Management, is responsible for all aspects of the IAS engineering function to include technical direction on major aircraft modification programs, personnel management, oversight of the Research and Development portfolio and engineering bidding and proposal activities. This role coordinates closely with the leaders of the other functions at IAS including P&L leadership, Program Management, Operations, Finance, Human Resources and Business Development to achieve the business’s objectives. The IAS Director, Engineering Management, reports directly to the Sr. Director of Engineering for the Aviation Services Sector.

Primary Responsibilities

Serve as the overall leader for the IAS Engineering organization. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Monitor and track engineering performance on development and production programs and guide successful execution through leadership of both program area Chief Engineers and functional discipline leads.

  • Partner with the other functional leaders to ensure that engineering is meeting program obligations and strategic objectives to include supporting competitive proposals.

  • Drive quality of engineering output/products and lead continuous productivity improvement throughout the organization, leveraging the E3 Program (Excellence, Everywhere, Everyday).

  • Program execution - ensure technical rigor adherence through participation in internal requirements and design reviews for major programs.

  • Oversee the development of technical roadmaps which support business area strategic goals and the execution of IAS Internal Research and Development (IRAD) efforts.

  • Interface with Sector and IAS financial, program management and human resources functions to forecast the demand of engineering resources.

  • Interface with Sector and Segment cross functional Leadership Teams on a regular basis.

  • Participate in competitive bid reviews analyzing the appropriateness of the engineering scope, basis of estimates and cost and schedule risks.


  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant engineering discipline, Master’s degree preferred.

  • 15 years (13 with Master’s Degree) experience working within and leading large cross functional engineering teams, in all lifecycle stages of aircraft production and/or modification.

  • Experience with airworthiness certification processes under both civil and military regulations.

  • Familiarity with airborne mission systems on military aircraft

  • Experience managing major sub-contractors and suppliers external to the organization.

  • Demonstrated history of recruiting, retaining, and promoting world class talent; develops staff members to optimize their potential and the performance of the discipline and the company.

  • Change agent with demonstrated examples; comfortable vigorously challenging the status quo.

  • Ability to take calculated risks, achieve success or fail quickly, learn and move ahead

  • Proposal experience; competitive proposals is highly desirable

  • Aircraft development program experience; turn-around program experience preferred

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; possesses strong organization and prioritization skills.

  • Comfortable working in a high volume, fast-paced, rapidly changing, results-oriented work environment

  • Self-confident with exceptional influencing, oral presentation and leadership skills

Reporting Relationship

  • The IAS Director, Engineering Management, is a direct report to the Sr. Director of Engineering, Aviation Services Sector.

Work Environment

  • Able to sit for prolonged periods and use a computer/keyboard

  • Ability to hold training and improvement activities

  • Typical office environment, as well as time in the manufacturing operations and flight line areas

  • Willing and able to work extended hours when necessary

  • Travel required (25% or more)
