Quidel is searching for a QC Instrumentation Technician to join our Athens, Ohio based team. The Quality Control Instrumentation Technician is responsible for evaluating customer returned and in-house Solana instruments and assisting in complaint investigations. This position performs instrument triage and problem diagnosis. This position supports commercialization of the Solana instrument by providing support to technical support, determining the failure mode for instrument complaints, and determining whether instrument problems are to be returned to the manufacturer for repair. Analysis of field issues will also be used as feedback to San Diego R&D/Engineering for potential instrument upgrades or product improvements (hardware, firmware, software). This position is responsible for incoming checks of new lots of Solana instruments and returned repaired instruments from the manufacturer as well as firmware, Operating Systems and method file updates as required.

Additional responsibilities include -

  • Performs functional and diagnostic testing of returned instruments from the field.

  • Decontaminates and “wipes” patient data from instruments.

  • Performs instrument triage and determines if instrument needs to be returned to the manufacturer for repair.

  • Works with instrumentation engineers and develops flow charts, procedures, and decision trees for instrument diagnosis and triage.

  • Performs complaint investigations to include performance of molecular assays to verify customer issues and/or verify the acceptability of instruments for return to shippable inventory.

  • Collaborates on Solana technical failure analysis investigations and identifies corrective actions to preclude recurrence.

  • Provides support to the Technical Support team to assist in solving customer issues with Solana instruments over the phone and provides feedback to the Technical Support team to ensure the troubleshooting steps are current.

  • Establishes and maintains instrument processing area.

  • Ensures instrument tracking logs are maintained.

  • Supports new product development and improvement projects.

  • Provides regular feedback regarding observations and findings from investigations on Solana instruments.

  • Performs incoming checks of new Solana lots as well as returned or repaired Solana instruments from the manufacturer.

  • Updates firmware, operating system and method files as necessary.

  • Carries out duties in compliance with established business policies.

Job Requirements

Education and Experience

  • AS or BS in Biological Sciences or equivalent combination of education and work experience required.

  • 1-3 years’ experience in performance of molecular-based assays preferred.

  • 1-3 years’ experience in an instrument lab or equivalent work environment preferred.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • QSR and ISO laboratory experience or equivalent required.

  • Good communication and computer skills required.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a high pace and dynamic working environment required.

  • Understanding of integration between software, firmware, and hardware for analytical instrumentation preferred.

  • Instrument diagnosis experience preferred.

  • Sound mechanical and electrical skills preferred.

  • Technical troubleshooting and root cause failure analysis experience preferred.
