The primary role of the team is to develop, deliver, maintain, upgrade and support internal test infrastructure and test frameworks within Qualcomm’s Connectivity R&D team based in Cambridge, UK. The team plays a vital role in the introduction of new products, by providing infrastructure which enables their development from first pre-production samples through to mass production.
You will customise, develop, test, document, deploy and support test infrastructure solutions (Hardware and Software) which are used by various test teams within R&D (globally).
We are looking for an Engineer with a focus on Hardware Design, Python and C. You will who also be willing to expand your knowledge and increase your skill set as part of the role. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic individual who is keen to learn and collaborate with colleagues, as well as take responsibility for individual project deliverables. You will be able to demonstrate the skills you have learned, whilst also showing your ability to problem solve and want to continually learn
Typical projects include requirements capture, system architecture design and Board-Level schematic design plus bench prototyping/soldering where required.
Designs vary from small dongles to 19” tower infrastructure.
Some of the boards may include micro-controllers, microprocessors, CPLD’s and FPGA’s.
The programmable devices need programming, usually in Verilog, C or Python.
The project deliverables need testing, so test solutions need to be developed - Unit Tests, Test Benches, Lab Bench level tests and Production Tests.
Some of the solutions form part of a bigger system, so the deliverable needs to be integrated and tested as part of the bigger system.
The final solution needs to be delivered to the end customer (Test teams) - Commissioning and handover.
Customer training is often needed along with ongoing customer support.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
To work with peers, senior team members and project stakeholders to collect project requirements
To document the project deliverables in a ‘Requirements Document’
To work with senior team members to determine the project is practical, realistic and aligns well / will integrate well with existing project deliverables / systems
To work with senior team members and stakeholders to agree on final project deliverables
Functional interfaces (Hardware, Verilog, Embedded, Drivers, Tools, Database, etc)
To work with peers, senior team members and project stakeholders to approve the project design
Once agreed, create JIRA tickets breaking down the job into tasks ready for assignment during the ‘Implementation phase’
Team approved tool sets
Team approved design processes
Code management tools
To implement test solutions
Running unit tests
Running HW tests
Running system tests
To cross-check test data against requirements and design specifications to ensure
Verify Production Test solution
To roll-out the project deliverables to stakeholders
To setup and configure stakeholder test systems
To create training material and provide training to users
To provide ongoing support to users
To identify bugs and fix them
To roll-out bug fixes and functional updates
To work with our customers to keep systems up to date and running efficiently
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical / Electronic Engineering or similar
5+ years Hardware Engineering experience or related work experience.
Preferred Qualifications / skills
Proven board level design skills
Board-Level Schematic Capture / PCB Layout
Working knowledge of industry standard communication interfaces and protocols, Micro-controllers and Processors, FPGA’s, power supplies, audio
Experience integrating Hardware / SW
Knowledge of designing for EMC and Safety
Proven Embedded ‘C’ design skills (Knowledge of MPLAB-X Harmony is helpful)
Proven Python skills (Knowledge of Python for GUI and web-based applications is helpful)
Proven problem solving and debugging skills (hardware and software)
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
It is also desirable to have some knowledge of:
- Verilog / System Verilog
- Board Level Hardware Design / Embedded C / Python / Verilog / System Verilog
