Organizational Overview

Brookhaven National Laboratory is entering an exciting new chapter with one of the newest and most advanced synchrotron facilities in the world. National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) enables the study of material properties and functions with nanoscale resolution and exquisite sensitivity by providing world-leading capabilities for X-ray imaging and high-resolution energy analysis.

This facility is open to users from academia and industry and its operations are at a time when the world enters a new era with a global economy fueled largely by scientific discoveries and technological innovations. NSLS-II provides the research tools needed to foster new discoveries and create breakthroughs in critical areas such as energy security, environment, and human health.

Position Description

We are currently seeking an experienced Group Leader for the Vacuum Group for National Synchrotron Light Source-II (NSLS-II). The Group Leader will oversee engineers and technicians in support of the facility operations, upgrades, and new projects. The candidate will be responsible for supervising the installation, operation, maintenance, repair, and upgrading vacuum systems and support equipment of the Synchrotron Storage Ring including the LINAC, Booster and associated Beamlines, as well as other support projects throughout the laboratory and other DOE facilities. Candidate will work closely with the managers of various groups of the Accelerator Division, Photon Division, and ESH. Position will report to the NSLS-II Accelerator Division Director.

Key responsibilities:

Responsibilities will include supervising the group that will handle the vacuum engineering and technical support for NSLS-II, including:

  • Maintaining and developing new vacuum systems at NSLS-II

  • Supporting operations, troubleshooting and repairs of vacuum systems

  • Provide technical expertise in the following areas:

  • Detailed mechanical and vacuum design

  • Vacuum cleaning and brazing

  • Leak checking and troubleshooting vacuum systems

  • Operation, maintenance, and repair of accelerator vacuum systems

  • Installing, fabricating, assembling, commissioning, troubleshooting, repairing, and operating mechanical and electro-mechanical components for vacuum systems and related equipment

  • Completing detailed cost and schedule estimates for the labor and material resources required for new projects

  • Carrying out R&D, design, procurement, fabrication, installation, and commissioning of the new vacuum projects

    Position Requirements

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline plus at least 10 years of relevant technical and management experience.

  • Experience with a minimum of (3) of the following: bakeout carts, turbopump systems, ion pumps, non-evaporable getter pumps, titanium sublimation pumps, residual gas analyzers, vacuum gauges and their associated controls.

  • Knowledge of vacuum leak checking, vacuum furnace brazing or UHV cleaning.

  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD 2D & 3D modeling or similar for design and layout of equipment

  • Experience managing projects and large procurements

  • Effective interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships

  • Demonstrated decision making, problem solving and strategic thinking skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

    Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (at least one or more of the following):

  • Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related field

  • Experience in the development or operation of an accelerator complex

  • Knowledge in reliability and maintenance criteria as it pertains to vacuum equipment.

  • Experience with EPICS (Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System) and CSS (Control System Studio) interface.

  • Experience with high voltage power supplies

  • Formal project management training

    Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Must be comfortable working in industrial, construction and radiation environments

  • Will require occasional climbing ladders, moderate lifting, working in the vicinity of operating machinery, exposure to noise, and the willingness to wear proper PPE

  • Will be required to become a qualified Radiation Worker

  • May be required to occasionally work off-hours, nights and/or weekends to support mission critical projects

    OTHER INFORMATION:

  • Occasional domestic and/or international travel

  • Selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level based on the depth and breadth of relevant engineering knowledge, skills, and experience.
