Why Work at BNL?

Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings premier facilities and expertise to the most exciting and meaningful questions in basic and applied science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate state-of-the-art large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. Brookhaven Lab employs nearly 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff, and engages more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world each year. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale. Brookhaven Science Associates, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization, operates Brookhaven Lab for the U.S Department of Energy.

Organizational Overview

The Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) at Brookhaven is a DOE-funded national scientific user facility, offering users a supported research experience with top-caliber scientists and access to state-of-the-art instrumentation. The CFN mission is advancing nanoscience through frontier fundamental research and technique development and is the nexus of a broad collaboration network. Each year, CFN staff members support the research of nearly 600 external facility users.

Three strategic nanoscience themes underlie the CFN scientific facilities: The CFN conducts research on nanomaterial synthesis by assembly designing precise architectures with targeted functionality by organizing nanoscale components. The CFN researches and applies platforms for state-of-the-art techniques for Accelerated Nanomaterial Discovery, integrating synthesis, advanced characterization, physical modeling, and computer science to iteratively explore a wide range of material parameters. The CFN develops and utilizes advanced capabilities for studies of Nanomaterials in Operando Conditions for characterizing materials and reactions at the atomic scale in real-world environments.

Position Description

The CFN is searching for an accomplished professional to join the Nanofabrication Facility as a member of the Clean Room technical staff. The CFN Nanofabrication facility is utilized by 100 scientists annually, and is a key element of many cutting-edge nanoscience projects. You will play a crucial role in maintaining this critical, highly-subscribed facility, and in increasing the value of this facility to users by developing and deploying new nanofabrication workflows.

In this role, you will be a part of a team maintaining state-of-the-art instruments and capabilities, developing new techniques, and assisting CFN scientists and users with their research in a highly collaborative environment. You will oversee thin film deposition and optical lithography capabilities. You will develop and maintain procedures to standardize and regularly monitor instrument performance including etch and deposition rates, to improve process reliability. You will assist CFN mail-in users to carry out their projects remotely—communicating with users, shipping and receiving samples, and guiding samples through established processes. You will help develop new workflows for standardized fabrication processes and make them available to staff and users. In this role, you will work collaboratively with the other cleanroom staff and more broadly with the entire CFN scientific staff.

Roles and Responsibilities

As the Cleanroom Scientific Associate, you will have these roles and responsibilities:

  • You will oversee CFN thin film deposition and optical lithography instrumentation, including maintenance, troubleshooting, and coordinating with vendors for service/repair.

  • You will develop and implement procedures to standardize and regularly monitor instrument performance, improving process reliability.

  • You will assist mail-in CFN nanofabrication users to carry out their work remotely.

  • You will develop new workflows to standardize fabrication processes, making them available to users and staff.

  • You will work as a key member of the cleanroom team, helping with general cleanroom tasks including instrument maintenance and facility planning.

    Position Requirements

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

You are qualified for this role if:

  • You have a Bachelor's degree in a technical field (materials science, electrical engineering, physics, chemistry, or another relevant field).

  • You have at least three (3) years of progressively responsible related work experience, two (2) of which should be working in a cleanroom;

  • You are expert in thin film instruments, fabrication techniques, and materials characterization;

  • You are experienced with developing and implementing micro- and nanofabrication process flows;

  • You are committed to fostering an environment of safe scientific work practices.

    Preferred background and experience:

You are well-matched to this position if:

  • You are comfortable troubleshooting issues with equipment (e.g. vacuum pumps) and with lithographic workflows.

  • You work effectively in a collaborative team to help maintain a user facility;

  • You have earned Master's and/or PhD;

  • You have demonstrated an ability to quickly learn new experimental techniques and instrumentation operation;

  • You are able to balance a range of responsibilities on a schedule;

  • You communicate effectively, both verbally and through technical writing.

Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Energy and Photon Sciences Directorate are committed to your success. We offer a supportive work environment and the resources necessary for you to succeed.
