The Electrical Power and Control Systems Department in the Systems and Emerging Capabilities Division of the Undersea Systems Office (USO) within the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is seeking entry level to early career engineers to collaborate with mentors for work on complex system-of-systems concepts and development of prototypes to demonstrate concepts.

This position will be filled as a level 1 or level 2 depending upon the successful candidate’s competencies, education and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline plus 2 years’ related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 2. A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering is preferred.

Requirements of this position include:

  • Hands-on skills and a solid understanding of electronics concepts and proven ability to build, troubleshoot, and integrate hardware/firmware with larger, more complex systems

  • Experience using embedded C/C++ and VHDL/Verilog firmware languages

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Demonstrated accountability

  • Good time management is necessary

  • Willingness to work within a team environment

  • Domestic travel may be required

Knowledge in one or more of the following areas is desired:

  • MATLAB/Simulink, LabVIEW and real-time software programming

  • Analog and digital writing software (C, C++, Ada, or Fortran) for engineering applications

  • CAD tools for schematic capture, layout, and generation of procurement documentation (Altium Design Suite highly recommended)

  • Hardware expertise in both low-voltage and high-voltage systems as well as battery systems involving Lithium-based battery technologies

  • Microsoft Office tools.
