JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (http://icds.psu.edu/) (ICDS) and the Center for Immersive Experiences (CIE) at the Pennsylvania State University are seeking to fill a joint position for an Assistant Research Professor in augmented, mixed, and virtual reality (i.e., XR or immersive technologies).

This faculty member will be an integral contributor to a fast-paced and growing team of specialists supported by an exciting $60 million Penn State investment in research in computational and data sciences and Penn State’s signature initiative in immersive experiences. Penn State’s elite researchers use our high-performance research cloud to solve real-world problems by conducting simulations, data mining, and other high-performance computing operations. CIE offers state-of-the-art immersive technologies and a vibrant team of specialists in many related areas. With ICDS and CIE, and associated researchers, you will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects. A strong focus is placed on technical skills and scientific skills related to the quantitative and qualitative evaluation of immersive technologies. The ideal candidate must be adaptable and capable of thriving in a rapidly changing environment, where approaches and technologies may change quickly.

The candidate should have experience working in research teams focused on augmented, virtual, and 3D social spaces in an academic setting. Must have grant-writing experience on interdisciplinary research projects. Experience working with and mentoring junior researchers is also preferred. A Ph.D. in human-centered computing or other relevant field is required; teaching experience or experience designing learning experiences for students in XR a plus.

  • 3D modeling and visualization skills (modeling for real-time rendering is a plus)

  • Programming skills (in particular C#)

  • Experience in the development of software for commercial or open-source applications

  • Code management system such as git

  • Application development with game engines such as Unity3D and Unreal Engine

  • Experience in learning assessment

  • Experience in the design of experimental evaluations of (immersive) learning

  • Communication skills for interacting with academics, instructional designers, and others across the academic spectrum

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
