Internet Archive Program Officer, Community Programs in Toronto OR remote, Ontario

The Internet Archive is seeking a Program Officer for the Community Programs team in our Archiving & Data Services group. The Community Programs team cultivates groups of affiliated organizations and works to provide services, training, education, and support to expand their efforts for long-term stewardship of digital library and archive collections. The team?s flagship program is Community Webs, established in 2017 and now a nationwide initiative in the United States, that enables public libraries and memory organizations to document local history, especially of underrepresented groups, through cohort building, professional development, and technical services. The Program Officer will be instrumental in helping extend this program to other countries and other sectors and in expanding how the Internet Archive can provide infrastructure and technologies to help memory and research organizations fulfill our shared goal of open access to knowledge.

The Program Officer will play a key role in supporting the program?s objectives, especially expanding activities into Canada, internationally, and with other cultural heritage and non-profit sectors. The role will assist with coordinating the recruitment and management of participating organizations and will provide programmatic and technical support to program member activities. The role contributes in a variety of areas: communications, outreach and engagement, community management, collaborating with internal product and engineering teams, and working with our tools and services on behalf of partner organizations to further archiving, digital preservation, open access, and scholarly research.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work directly with the Community Programs Manager and other managers, and a diverse group of participating external organizations, to help execute program objectives and to grow and expand the program?s work into new communities, especially across Canada.

  • Coordinate, and often lead, community cultivation and coordination of digital library and archive services for participating organizations, including training, cohort participation, events, communications, and online activities.

  • Provide technical and programmatic support for existing Community Programs members and affiliated services, and work directly with prospective members and collaborating organizations.

  • Work with department senior staff, as well as product, operations, and engineering team to ensure quality of services for Community Programs projects.

  • Report out on key metrics, program objectives and outcomes for internal audiences and contribute to grant reports, contracts, partnerships and strategic collaborations, communications, and outreach.

    Qualification and Skills:

  • 2-3 years of demonstrated project management or technical or community support experience working directly with large, high-value institutions is strongly preferred.

  • Experience with product operations or patron services is preferred.

  • Experience working within distributed teams, working with engineers and support staff, and knowledge and/or experience working remotely is a plus.

  • Experience working directly for or with libraries, archives, memory institutions, non-profits, or open knowledge, open education, or social impact organizations.

  • Must be able to balance multiple simultaneous projects, prioritize deadlines and responsibilities, and work in and enjoy a loosely-structured, dynamic work environment where all staff are juggling many projects and areas of responsibility.

  • Candidates must have strong communication skills to represent community programs both internally and externally, including comforts with public speaking and community management and leadership.

  • Candidates should have a demonstrated interest in advancing the work of libraries, memory, and research organizations, especially through program building and technical services.

  • Flexibility, self-reliance, a sense of humor, a creative approach to problem-solving, and a production-oriented mentality are valuable qualities for success in the role.

  • Legal entitlement to work in Canada is required -- Canadian citizenship, permanent resident status, or refugee status in Canada. Non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible. Bilingual (English and French) is preferred, as the role?s preliminary focus will be on working with Canadian organizations.

    Location: Remote, Canada-based strongly preferred. Status: Full-time, Permanent Schedule: 40 hours weekly
