Dow has an exciting opportunity for aProcess OperatorinToronto (West Hills), ON.

Job Summary:

Operates assigned equipment or areas of the Plant. Performs and reports on operational related activities per the Operations Dashboard (OPD)-Tasks List. Utilizes discretionary time to enable sustainable performance results for the facility. Utilizes operations knowledge and experience, to proactively operate the plant in a safe, reliable and optimal manner. Works with Shift Team members to efficiently anticipate and resolve unplanned events within the capabilities of the shift team and effectively escalates issues that cannot be resolved to the appropriate support roles. May provide training to less experienced operators. Requires established basic technical skills to perform a range of routine work activities using existing processes and methods. Note: Operator Progression is managed at the site level.

The Blend Tank Operator is primarily responsible for the safe and efficient manufacture of acrylic emulsions using a batch process. Primary activities include obtaining raw materials, transferring materials, following standard operating procedures, and operating a computerized control system to manufacture products. Blend Tank Operators will be trained on most tasks in both production areas to support production in both areas as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Follows Operating Discipline policies, principles, procedures, standards and practices to ensure safe, reliable and efficient operation of assigned plant areas..

  • Operates and field checks process equipment. Monitors process conditions, key performance metrics, equipment and control systems and makes appropriate decisions to achieve desired rates and conditions aligned with Site/Business goals.

  • Works with shift team members and others to leverage skills and knowledge to balance workload ensuring assigned tasks are completed by due dates.

  • Conducts effective shift relief, as defined in facility specific operating discipline and tools, to ensure effective communication and handoff to arriving shift team.

  • Mentors and trains new and existing operations personnel on process operation, troubleshooting and the use of operating discipline in alignment to plant's training process.

  • Performs Immediate Response activities, as assigned.

  • Documents preliminary investigations according to plant specific process/criteria and participates in formal and informal Root Cause Investigations.

  • Tracks and utilizes plant key performance metrics that are applicable to the Operating Plant role to identify improvements opportunities.

  • Obtain raw materials to be used in the production process.

  • Weigh raw materials.

  • Add and transfer raw materials to process vessels, both manually and via computer- operated control systems.

  • Prepare chemical solutions and additions.

  • Interact with process computers and associated instrumentation to monitor batch operations and operate process equipment. Maintain control over the batch process at all times ensuring strict adherence to standard operating procedures.

  • Readily identify abnormal batch situations and take appropriate action.

  • Conduct in-process sampling.

  • Make in-process chemical adjustments to the product.

  • Filter and transfer products to storage.

  • Recycle process white water.

  • Complete production records and paperwork.

  • Maintain cleanliness of the area through excellent housekeeping practices.

  • Initiate and participate in Environment Health and Safety reviews.

  • Remove empty drums, totes, pallets and garbage from the area and sort them for pickup/disposal.

  • Conduct housekeeping inspections.

  • Conduct safety observations of their co-workers.

Required Qualifications:

  • Able to drive a forklift and other vehicles.

  • Willing/able to work in a chemical environment.

  • Have a high regard for personal safety and the safety of others.

  • Ability to learn new systems quickly.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong multi-tasking, organizational, problem solving and time management skills.

  • Demonstrate leadership skills - inspire others and lead them through influence.

  • Able to work a 12-hour rotating shift schedule, including every second weekend.

  • Able to provide overtime coverage, as required.

  • A minimum requirement for this Canada based position is the ability to work legally in the Canada. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position.

Able to meet the following physical demands of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations:

  • Lift, push, and pull up to 55 lbs.

  • Frequent bending, reaching, and lifting

  • Stand 50% of the time.

  • Walk for extended periods of time

  • Work at heights, climb stairs and ladders.

  • Work in tight and closed in spaces.

  • Wear all required personal protective equipment, including but not limited to full face respirator.

  • Work in an area of intense or continuous noise.

  • Work in an area with hazardous materials

  • Able to periodically work outdoors in extreme weather conditions (e.g. heat, cold).

  • Able to perform sustained manual activities at moderate to heavy levels of exertion.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 or more years of relevant industrial experience in chemical or related industrial environment.

  • Proficient in SAP and Microsoft, including Word, Outlook and Excel.

  • Previous experience in a related role, with experience driving shunt vehicles in similar industrial environment.

  • College diploma or higher Degree in Chemical Processing, Chemical Operations, Manufacturing, etc. or relevant technical training or certification.

Education:

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
