Opto-Mechanical Engineering @ L3HARRIS

WESCAM Division


We develop the most advanced optical systems for global defense and military sectors, Homeland Security, Search and Rescue and Airborne law enforcement agencies worldwide. These systems provide stabilized, high-magnification Electro-optic and Infrared (EO/IR) laser, surveillance and targeting systems for airborne, marine and ground based platforms.

Opto-Mechanical Engineering At a Glance

Our Opto-Mechanical Engineering team is considered by many to be the best in the industry for 2 reasons.

  • They develop ruggedized optical assemblies and systems on products that are relied on to protect lives.

  • The gyro-stabilized optical systems we develop take a serious beating, and every good opto-mechanical engineer knows that assembly distortion is kind of a big deal relative to the geometrical efficiency of the shape of a beam.

This is the team that determines design considerations and analysis, image motion and orientation, precision positioning, fastening and adjustments. Their focus is either on new commercial electro-mechanical drive systems for the optical assemblies from or working on complex new prototypes.

CodeV and ZEMAX is our go-to optical design software, and our Mechanical CAD software is Solidworks.

Precision or Fine Mechanics is an often-used term around L3Harris WESCAM – our Opto-Mechanical Engineers design, build and validate designs using our own test fixtures, submit to rigorous design reviews, share the technical responsibility of the development process and even as far as the selection and management of engineering tools.

Domain Expertise We Look For

The type of expertise we require can vary depending on the where we are in a business cycle – new product introduction or high customization or sheer volume. These are a few common themes that are consistent amongst our team:

  • Structural Analysis (FEA)

  • Thermal Analysis (FEA & CFD)

  • GD&T

  • Fundamental Frequency

  • Precision positioning

  • Root Cause Analysis and Trending Analysis

  • CAD design using preferably SolidWorks

  • Rugged optical assemblies

  • Electro-mechanical drive design principles

  • Virtual prototyping and analysis of complex mechanical designs before they are built and tested

Education / Academic / Experiential Backgrounds We Look For

Our team’s academic complexion ranges from Bachelor’s of Applied Science to Masters of Mechanical Engineering. We also have Physics and other Engineering disciplines on the team including Materials Science. While these are just a sample of degree's we look for, these roles are not suitable for new or recent graduates as these roles require someone with education and a number of years of working experience.

The experiences that each member of our team draw from is as unique as our products themselves – we enjoy backgrounds from aerospace/aviation, biomedical engineering, robotics and automation, defense & space, even the entertainment/cinematic world.
