American Express Junior Engineer in Topeka, Kansas


Provides support for major enterprise applications within the organization. Contributes in the investigation and resolution of incidents and problems in systems and services. Contributes with problem identification, escalation and the implementation of agreed remedies and preventative measures. Contributes with the implementation of agreed remedies and preventative measures. Works closely with development teams to ensure that quality standards are adhered to during development and implementation and contributes to Post-Implementation Reviews.

Key responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, test, debug, deploy, and support a variety of applications.

  • Perform code reviews.

  • Documents application related processes and procedures.

  • Provides support to investigate and circumvent production issues using incident tickets.

  • Carries out root cause analysis and resolution of problems using problem tickets.

  • Participates in the development and deployment of preventative maintenance procedures.

  • Perform any other assigned tasks deemed necessary by management.

  • Please note, salary increases in case of a lateral move are provided only on an exception basis and in line with compensation guidelines.


Key qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, computer engineering or related field strongly desired. Equivalent work experience will be considered in lieu of degree.

  • General Knowledge of distributed (multi-tiered) systems, algorithms and relational databases.

  • Proficiency in Java programming language is a must.

  • Experience working with anyone of the RDBMS database products like Oracle, mySQL or MS SQL Server is a must.

  • Knowledge of Java frameworks/toolkits like Apache Camel and VertX is a plus.

  • Knowledge of any of the leading NoSQL technologies is a plus.

  • Experience working in front end UI development is a plus.

  • Must be able to understand Agile practices.

  • Able to demonstrate analytical thinking and adaptive communication

  • Able to demonstrate problem solving.

  • Understanding of the core components of application support
