Title: Extension Educator Agricultural Production Systems Classification: Assistant Extension Educator, Job Code 9625ST Appointment: Full-time (100% time), Funded by Nicollet and Sibley Counties Extension Center: Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (AFNR) Location: Nicollet County Extension Office, St. Peter, MN Sibley County Extension Office, Gaylord, MN Application Review: March 8, 2021; position is open until filled. ABOUT THE COUNTIES Nicollet and Sibley Counties are located southwest of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Gaylord is the County seat in Sibley County and St. Peter is the county seat in Nicollet County. Agriculture is a major industry in the counties; the combined market value of products sold in both counties in 2017 was $658,028,000. Sibley County has about 898 farms and 350,036 acres in production; Nicollet County has about 689 farms and 265,000 acres. Average farm size is 390 and 359 acres respectively in 2017; up about 6.5% from the previous census 5 years earlier. Crop income outpaces livestock income in in Sibley County, whereas, in Nicollet County it is the reverse. The two counties are the largest counties producing eggs and pullets in Minnesota. Dairy, hogs and beef are the other major livestock in the two counties. ABOUT THIS POSITION The University is looking for candidates with skills and experience in: engaging stakeholders in agriculture; developing and strengthening networks; and teaching and facilitating informal educational agricultural and horticultural programs that are relevant to Nicollet and Sibley Counties. This support will involve local program development, delivery, marketing, evaluation, coordination of logistics and possibly participation in scholarly research. This position will also be responsible for determining local needs involving AFNR programming and will provide technical assistance and information in the area of crops, livestock, agricultural business management, and horticulture, as well as oversight of the Master Gardener program. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to apply knowledge to new and future programs that support and enhance the production and economic development of agriculture in both counties. Effort will be required to maintain competency in multiple Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (AFNR) discipline areas as well as familiarity with local/federal/state related programs. THIS POSITION WILL: 1) Provide research-based resources to agricultural producers in Nicollet and Sibley Counties. 2) Build relationships with agriculture professionals to foster educational efforts and economic development. 3) Provide relevant education and support to agriculture and horticulture. 4) Design/conduct educational programs and make them accessible and inviting to diverse participants. 5) Provide technical assistance and expertise in the areas of production. 6) Communicate effectively and positively with colleagues and stakeholders about the work. For example: Design, develop, deliver/implement, and evaluate local AFNR educational programs based on local needs and expectations, developing and maintaining effective county, regional, University and state partnerships that further the development and delivery of Extension educational programs. Engage with producers, agricultural professionals and stakeholders to build rapport and working relationships to benefit educational efforts. Provide oversight for the Master Gardener program, which includes: managing recruitment, communications, program planning, financial management, and ensuring their work focuses on education of others and aligns with state program focus and needs, as well as, county needs. Utilize numerous delivery methods to teach around agricultural issues that are important to maintaining the viability, profitability and sustainability of agricultural operations in both counties.
