The Paper Application Engineer, Consumer Products (Tissue) Division serves as the primary subject matter expert in tissue production across a diverse portfolio of tissue production assets capable of producing the full spectrum of tissue products ranging from economy to ultra. This role is responsible for leading in collaboration with the plant managers and paper machine leaders the development and deployment of tissue production asset reliability strategy integrating technical support, product development, quality systems and predictive maintenance programs with a focus on improving productivity and operating efficiencies. As one of the technical leaders, the application engineer will be called up to lead short- and long-term capital projects ranging from asset management to environmental and safety programs.

  • Serves as principle internal subject matter expert to support operating sites in identifying and resolving paper machine operations and process related opportunities leveraging FMEA, VAVE and Root Cause Analysis

  • Lead the development and execution of assets reliability & Yankee safety programs incorporating capital prioritization and predictive maintenance programs for tissue production (i.e. Vibration, Lube& Oil analysis)

  • Research, identify and develop projects and process improvement areas to support improvement in product production, product development; collaborate across the division to gain alignment- develop & execution project plans supporting the 3+year strategy for paper machines

  • Serve as principle contact to outside contractors and service providers, providing leadership and direction delivering projects and services within budget and time constraints

  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement through the review, refresh and refinement of tissue production asset maintenance roadmap, parts strategy and vendor management

  • Identify opportunities to improve overall performance through development and deployment of maintenance standards; process engineering, machine design/layout with emphasis on supporting energy saving programs

  • Develop, execute and maintain product quality systems and process documentation throughout manufacturing footprint delivering consistent products with a commitment to meeting and exceeding customer expectations as a preferred private label supplier

  • Leverage engineering technical expertise through collaboration with sales & marketing to identify market opportunities by providing technical insights into asset capabilities

  • Communicate identified best practices and ensure long term application across the network

  • Support E-Save initiatives and process

  • Organizes and manages chemical and clothing vendor agreements in conjunction with procurement and manufacturing

  • Foster an operating environment that encourages employee engagement through demonstration and modeling of Clearwater Paper’s Core Values

  • Drive a culture of technical collaboration throughout Paper Machine Superintendents, Supervisors, Process Engineers, and Business Unit Leaders

  • Enable technical and quality sustainment plan by promoting developing and transferring knowledge across work groups

  • Provide technical consultative insight in collaboration with Manufacturing Director, for Qualification Cards (Q-Cards) for tissue production assets


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Business Administration Operations Management, or related field required, Master’s in Engineering preferred

  • 10+ years of progressive responsibility in tissue production process engineering and manufacturing operations required

  • 5+ years budgetary responsibilities (Project or Operating Budget)

  • Experience in tissue and paper industry strongly preferred; continuous manufacturing considered

  • Experience in both manufacturing, commercial (sales) and vendor management required

  • Certifications in Project Management, TPM or Continuous Improvement (Six Sigma Green Belt/BlackBelt) desired but not required

Skills/Abilities: (technical/professional skills, expertise and qualifications)

  • Certified Project Management (PMP) and change management methodologies strongly preferred

  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing personal development through continuing education, coaching and developing others

  • Highly adept performing at a fast pace communicating and collaborating across multiple stakeholders

  • Confident and proficient in navigating in an automated environment with proficiency in MS Office Suite, multiple business intelligence databases

  • Travel approximately 40% of the time
