DOW has a unique opportunity for aLife Cycle Assessment/Techno Economic Assessment Research Scientistto be located inTerneuzen (The Netherlands) or Seneffe (Belgium).
Engineering & Process Sciences, Core R&D supports new product/process innovation, technology development, and a mix of business-related programs with life cycle assessment (LCA) and early-stage product and process cost analyses (a.k.a.: techno-economic assessments (TEA)). Core R&D will be the LCA center of expertise for the company and will be responsible for influencing internal and external thinking around LCA’s. We seek a researcher capable of collaborating closely with business partners to develop and manage an LCA/TEA projects. This person should conceptualize and quantitatively assess chemical processes and products by applying LCA and techno-economic assessment methodology in order to guide key project decisions and enable improved business and research success in alignment with Dow’s sustainability and process intensification goals.
Roles and Responsibilities Include:
Completing life cycle assessments consistent with ISO standards, including data acquisition, compilation, calculation, interpretation and documentation.
Preparing appropriate life cycle information (such as water or carbon “footprints”) for communication to customers or other external parties.
Completing early-stage technical &/or cost assessments in manners consistent with established Dow methodologies, and developing customized cost-estimating methods as needed,
Collaborating with process development specialists, Dow subject matter experts, &/or equipment vendors to frame-up process performance expectations (i.e.: reaction yields, isolation efficiencies, etc.), toward the creation of mass balances
Training other on the fundamentals of life cycle and techno-economic assessments.
Keeps current with developments in relevant area of technology. Serves as an information resource for the project team and stakeholders.
With minimal coaching, communicates clearly and effectively in a timely manner (verbal and written formats) and effectively interacts with audience for related discussions.
Demonstrates a working knowledge of team alignment with R&D and Business goals.
Serves on multi-disciplinary project teams to collaborate, provide technical input, and deliver results aligned with team deliverables.
Identifying sources of uncertainty in technologies and cost estimates, and applying appropriate tools to understand potential affects (i.e.: sensitivity analyses, Monte Carlo simulations, etc.),
Preparing appropriate cost and risk information for communication to Dow business representatives and other stakeholders, including working with Marketing &/or Finance to incorporate cost scenarios into NPV models,
Documenting assessments and project results in research reports.
Presenting at technical conferences and publishing in professional journals
Understands and follows appropriate EH&S standards, policies and procedures applicable to their job. Lead by example in the area of safety behaviors by promoting safe work habits.
Mentors junior level scientists.
Bachelors’ degree or higher in engineering, physical (including chemistry), or biological sciences; prefer at least one degree in chemical engineering.
Experience with life cycle assessment methods and tools, through classes, projects and work or willingness to learn.
5+ years of experience with industrial process development, including applied research, scale-up &/or chemical manufacturing; preferably across a broad mix of process technologies (technical flexibility &/or agility)
Project management experience.
Preferred locations include Terneuzen and Seneffe co-located with business/Core R&D and M&E.
