Nordstrom Principal Software Engineer - Payments Platform in Seattle, Washington

Being the Nordstrom Payments Technology Team, we own a critical pipeline that powers the frictionless online and store payment capabilities for Nordstrom. Our system provides fast and secure payment solutions, enables modern digital payment methods, and prevents fraud & abuse in the space.

We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer to lead the software development across multiple squads in the payment team. This person will involve in the full development cycle, mentor the developers and partner with engineering managers to ensure the smart design and high-quality delivery of the software.

A day in the life..

  • Understand architecture and systems at the organization level. Design and develop end-to-end solution to support Nordstrom’s Payments Platform that processes billions of dollars transactions annually.

  • Collaborate with the agile, multi-discipline payments teams as well as cross-functional organizations to solve technical problems and come up with cross-team solutions. Elaborate ideas and drive consensus among multiple engineering teams.

  • Mentor the development teams on engineering practices, coach the engineers to develop robust, supportable, secure, scalable software for a high-availability, high- volume system.

  • Lead the software development activities such as design sessions and code reviews in a hands-on style, ensure the team applies the software development best practices.

  • Coach the team on technical problem solving, help the management make smart decisions and tradeoffs, and deliver the projects on time with high quality.

  • Drive operation excellence, proactively identify system and process weakness to prevent production downtime, take timely measures to remediate production incidents.

  • Provide vision to future roadmaps and architecture for the payments tech team

We’d love it if you have…

  • 10+ years of professional experience and a related Bachelor's or Master's degree

  • 5+ years of experience mentoring engineers

  • Comprehensive knowledge of backend technology – Java, AWS, APIs, services, event queues, database technologies, etc.

  • Strong large-scale backend system design skills

  • Strong communication, leadership, organizing and problem-solving skills

  • Passion for new technologies, operational excellence and customer impact.

  • Experience with payment and store retail industries a huge plus for this role

  • Knowledge of Linux/Docker and open-source software development is desired but not required.

  • Experience with e-commerce and payment processing a plus.
