Sutter Health Licensed Vocational Nurse in Santa Rosa, California

Position Overview:

Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation is a not for profit corporation that exists to provide medical services, research and education. The foundation provides the infrastructure for the delivery of physician services, and contracts with a separate corporation comprised of physicians and other care providers to deliver the clinical services. This multi-specialty foundation will provide a platform from which new physicians can be recruited to continue to provide physician services in a nonprofit, community setting. The Foundation's vision is to create a medical group that will deliver high quality, market competitive medical services.

Provides specific functions for the care and treatment of patients in the Ambulatory Care setting. The incumbent must possess exceptional public relations/customer service skills, as well as a working knowledge of standard medical assisting. The LVN assists the physician/mid-level clinician by providing clinical support in all aspects of patient care.


•Performs tests and procedures as requested by clinicians.

•Completes tasks pursuant to a written order by the Physician.

•Completes requisitions, including the scheduling of tests and/or procedures when necessary.

•Prepares clinic and patients for clinic visits.

•Ensures that pertinent labs and test results are accessible in charts prior to clinic start time, or as needed by physician, NP, RN or clinical case manager.

•Maintains inventory of the clinic and exam room supplies. Orders necessary items in a cost-effective manner with the approval of the supervisor.

•Processes and prepares for review and signature patient orders, prescriptions and refills. Calls in prescription refills as needed and within the LVN Scope of Practice (may not call in new prescriptions).

•Pulls charts and calls patients with appointment reminder a day prior to the appointment or as indicated by physician.

Technical Skills:

•Demonstrates competence in clinical practice by adherence to all nursing standards.

•Demonstrates competency in the performance of vital signs, injections, pulmonary function tests, base line snellens, phlebotomy and EKGs and other depending on the clinical setting.

•Prints and makes required copies of patient schedules at the beginning of each day and distributes to appropriate sites as necessary.

•Prints lab/test results from PCIS.

Communication (Oral and Written):

•Communicates effectively and sensitively with patients and their families.

•Communicates instructions and assists patients when needed.

•Documents all patient interaction as per patient care and medical record standards.

•Answers the telephone promptly, responding according to “core” communication standards.

•Directs any clinical questions to either the nurse or doctor. Does NOT offer medical advice.

•Takes messages and provides routine information to callers

•Establishes and maintains a pleasant environment in the clinic by using a pleasant tone of voice and maintaining composure at all times.

Leadership and Professional Accountability:

•Receives and prepares patients promptly for examinations and procedures, and assists clinicians and patients as needed. Informs patients and clinicians within ten minutes when delays occur.

•Follows established departmental polices and procedures: safety, fire, disaster preparedness, environmental and infection control standards.

•Ensures that examination rooms and lab are suitably clean and neat for each patient visit. Cleans the exam rooms after patient visits and prepares the rooms for visits to follow.

•Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, in-service meetings and current literature.


•Ensures that all patients have current primary care physician’s name and address listed clearly in chart. If patient does not have a primary care physician, staff MD’s must be notified.

•Responsible for responding quickly to queries on refill line.

•Orders/Pulls, obtains and prepares charts as necessary according to Medical Record and Departmental Guidelines.

•Reviews all charts for complete updated patient information form a day prior to the patient visit. If not complete or available, informs Clinical Coordinator/Scheduler.

•Maintains and updates patient information packets for distribution to patients and other designated professionals.


Education, Licensures and Certifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

  • Licensed Vocational Nurse required.

  • Basic Life Support Certification - BLS required.


  • Combination of education and experience sufficient to perform primary responsibilities as would be typically obtained in a 2-year Licensed Vocational Nursing Program required.

  • Two-three (2-3) years of practical experience as an LVN in a physician's office preferred.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of scope of practice for LVN in the state of California.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations.

  • Knowledge of Universal Precautions.

  • Knowledge of clinical protocols for vital signs. Knowledge of normal values for vital signs (BP, Pulse, Respirations, Temps).

  • Ability to give safe, accurate injections. Ability to calculate medication dosages. Ability to accurately identify syringe calibrations. Ability to identify injection sites using anatomical landmarks.

  • Ability to identify and use basic medical equipment.

  • Knowledge of medical positioning for patients.

Knowledge of scheduling practices/referrals for physician offices preferred.
