Empirical Systems Aerospace, Inc. (ESAero) is a growing aerospace company in the San Luis Obispo area that provides various services including but not limited to: rapid system development, on-demand niche engineering, hands-on development/testing, and small UAS aerospace system manufacturing.

Job Summary:

ESAero is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to join our team in San Luis Obispo, CA. This engineer will support the hardware development of the battery system for unique all-electric and hybrid-electric aircraft configurations.?This is a multi-functional role that will also require candidates to be involved in all phases of design and development of new platforms collaborating with other engineering disciplines and project personnel.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Participate in any/all stages of research & development for the battery and electrical systems and components, including?but not limited to?requirements definition, design, prototype, test, troubleshooting,?and revision.

  • Develop engineering drawings, schematics, and design specifications

  • Assist in the development of system and component level requirements documents

  • Design, develop, and implement battery system and interfacing for aircraft systems according to aerospace standards

  • Develop electrochemical model to accurately predict power capability of state-of-the-art battery cells under various conditions

  • Coordinate with test team to troubleshoot high voltage system hardware and software

  • Lead the development of battery system test plans and reports

  • Regularly report on progress to Program Manager

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor?s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field

  • 7+ years of relevant engineering experience

  • Experience with battery system theory, modelling, design, and analysis

  • Experience with high voltage electrical implementation, test, and verification for air vehicles

  • Experience with FAA and Military standards relating to battery design for aircraft

  • Experience with RTCA/DO-160 and RTCA/DO-311A among other standards

  • Experience designing and integrating circuit protection for flight and safety critical systems

  • Experience with power conversion implementation, test, and verification

  • Experience with life and degradation modelling

  • Familiar with thermal management

  • Familiar with Risk Management

  • Willing to relocate to San Luis Obispo, CA

  • U.S. Citizen

Desired Qualifications and Skills:

  • Master?s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent

  • 10+ years of battery system design or relevant experience

  • Experience packaging custom battery packs and modules

  • Experience designing to FAA and Military standards relating to the control system design for aircraft

  • Experience in testing including instrumenting, data acquisition, and documenting and analyzing results.

  • Experience developing electrochemical model to predict charge and discharge performance capabilities of Li-Ion cells

  • Experience with thermal management

  • Familiar with electrode connection methodologies

  • Experience with Li-S, Li-Ion, Li-metal, and other battery cell chemistries

  • Experience with life and degradation modelling

  • Experience with Altium and SolidWorks

  • Experience with Risk Management
