Empirical Systems Aerospace, Inc. (ESAero) is a growing aerospace company in the San Luis Obispo area that provides various services, which include but are not limited to rapid system development, on-demand niche engineering, hands-on development/testing, electrified aircraft propulsion expertise, and small UAS aerospace system manufacturing.
ESAero is seeking a highly experienced Mechanical or Aerospace Engineer to join our team in San Luis Obispo, CA. This engineer should have experience with shaft-driven aircraft propulsion system design and integration. This engineer should also have experience with vertical lift propulsion system technology and development processes. This is a multirole position with involvement in all phases of the design and development of novel flight platforms. The engineer for this position must demonstrate proficiency in collaborating with other engineering disciplines.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Participate in all stages of the research & development of aircraft powertrain systems and components, including?but not limited to?requirements definition, design, prototype, test, troubleshooting,?and revision.
Participate in the development, integration, and testing of shaft-driven aircraft propulsion systems, including but not limited to:
Structural and aerodynamic analysis of propeller and rotor blades
Mechanical design of propeller and rotor actuators
Gear reduction drive systems
Installation and mounting
Command and data signal interfaces
Assist in the development of system and component-level requirements and associated documentation.
Prepare engineering drawings, design specifications, interface control documents, etc.
Lead the development and execution of hardware tests for isolated items and integrated systems.
Coordinate with test team to troubleshoot issues.
Regularly report on progress to Program Manager
Directly communicate with external entities including customers, suppliers, and regulatory agencies.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
Bachelor?s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
5+ years design, testing or relevant experience.
Experience with rotor blade actuation design, implementation, and testing
Experience with common issues and best practices when dealing with rotor system design and integration.
Experience with relevant control techniques and troubleshooting on-vehicle hardware.
Extensive familiarity with existing relevant state-of-the-art technology
Proficiency with SolidWorks
Willing to relocate to San Luis Obispo, CA
Desired Qualifications and Skills:
Master?s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent
7+ years design, testing or relevant experience
Experience with field bus communications protocols, e.g., CAN bus, ETHERcat, TCP/IP, Serial, etc.
Familiarity with RTCA/DO-160 Environmental Conditions and Test Procedures for Airborne Equipment
Experience with test instrumentation, data post processing and analysis
Familiarity with SIMULINK/MATLAB
Familiarity with high power electro-mechanical propulsion systems
Familiarity with 14 CFR Part 35 and other relevant regulations and standards
