The Director, Global EHS and Sustainability will champion initiatives related to EHS risk management, product environmental compliance, energy management, the environmental impact of our products and operations, and corporate social responsibility, including creating and overseeing the organization’s sustainability strategy by providing leadership, guidance, and direction to ensure successful planning, implementation, and sustainment of global sustainability program. This leader will also play a key role in support of EHS activities related to acquisitions, both during the due diligence phase and during post-acquisition integration of acquired businesses.
This critical global role reports to the Vice President and General Counsel and will maintain a matrix reporting relationship with, and provide leadership, development guidance, and mentoring for all site based BEC LS EHS, facilities and energy management professionals. This person will provide leadership and coordinate with multiple stakeholders and departments within BEC LS as well as external stakeholders, outside agencies, and vendors to meet daily management and strategic goals and targets using Danaher Business System (DBS) tools. This role requires significant travel and time at Gemba and can be based at BEC LS manufacturing locations in the Indianapolis, San Jose, or Denver metropolitan areas.
Develop, implement, and manage all Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) programs to ensure compliance with established Beckman Coulter and Danaher Corporation, Federal, State, and local regulations /policies.
Develop, implement, and lead the global BEC LS sustainability strategy in line with Danaher sustainability goals and objectives.
Establish and achieve goals based on gap analysis of department or plant EHS performance; prioritize issues and projects to achieve EHS compliance.
Collaborate with other Danaher EHS functional leaders, sustainability stakeholders and SME’s to benchmark what “good” looks like, learns and communicate best practices, and encourages development of standard work to ensure effective daily management of facilities KPI bowlers.
Build and maintain a strong relationship with the facilities team by providing development opportunities and the resources to reach sustainability maturity.
Establish and monitor department budget and expenditures to meet the financial goals of the department.
Stay current on regulatory issues/trends through seminars, networking, industry group participation; advise management on potential impact of proposed legislation; develop plans; arrange funding to stay in compliance with new regulations.
Ensure adequate and appropriate safety, environmental, and regulatory training for BEC LS associates. Develop training programs, secure outside training as necessary, select/recommend sources for training aids and materials as needed.
Manage reporting of all accidents/incidents and ensure effective corrective measures are implemented. Manage associated EHS statistics and recordkeeping requirements.
Lead the development of company-wide, multi-year EHS strategies to provide program direction for associates and steering committees which deliver on continuous plant EHS performance objectives.
Provides leadership in risk assessment and business continuity planning.
Surveys, compiles, analyzes data, and recommends control measures relating to occupational and environmental health issues such as chemical exposure, radiation, smoke, fumes, noise, temperatures, dusts, vapors, mists, gases, solvents, lighting, and ergonomics which are known or suspected of being real or potential detriments to health.
Performs field and safety measurements, safety evaluations, and hazardous waste evaluations
Establishes and monitors KPI’s and other relevant metrics to ensure continuous improvement.
Lead EHS team and assist in development of EHS associates.
Represent Beckman LS on the Danaher EHS Operations Leadership Council
Candidates should have an undergraduate degree in science, engineering, or a related field.
EHS-related licenses, certifications and/or membership in EHS professional associations are desired.
Candidates should have a minimum of 10 years of experience in managing EHS or similar programs at the facility and enterprise level, a proven track record of driving the EHS agenda in a multi-site, global manufacturing organization, and possess the ability to engage the workforce at all levels in the journey to build a strong EHS culture and a collaborative team-oriented approach to EHS management across the enterprise.
In-depth knowledge of EHS principles and practices and OSHA and EPA regulatory requirements.
Master’s degree in business, engineering, or environmental management.
Experience in life sciences, medical device, or pharmaceutical manufacturing environments.
Experience communicating with and presenting information to all levels of management from site level Facilities Manager to President.
Strong leadership, analytical, organizational, and project management skills.
Experience managing people in multiple geographies
Excellent verbal and written communications, presentation and negotiation skills
Proven record of providing excellent internal and external customer service.
