Our location in San Diego, CA currently has an opportunity for a Senior Scientist - Technical Operations as a part of our Toxicology business unit. The scope of this position is responsible in leading research, experimental design/execution, and implementation of strategies formulated to develop next generation assays and resolve technical issues in coordination with all departments. This job description will be reviewed periodically and is subject to change by management.


  • Technical expert on manufacturing lateral flow assays, from formulations of chemicals, bioconjugation, nitrocellulose, gold particles understanding the manufacturing process and how they work together

  • Develop and execute complex, robust experiments to be performed individually, for junior staff, and other departments as necessary

  • Work to improve assay performance in both operational yield as well as performance of the assay

  • Participate as an integral member of the technical staff on site in development of strategies and methodologies

  • Able to lead multiple projects simultaneously, ensure deliverables are met on time, and manage multiple project teams

  • Work closely with management in product improvement, process improvement, and streamlining processes

  • Research (through literature review) and implement innovated methods for formulation and production to resolve technical issues

  • Coordinate and supervise junior staff to assign experiments, review results, and draw conclusions

  • Train junior staff and all levels of personnel on any new techniques or methods to be implemented

  • Able to be flexible with changing priorities

  • Maintain clear and accurate records of experiments in a laboratory notebook

  • Write complex study protocols and reports, that show a clear understanding of objectives, execution, data analysis, and conclusions

  • Generate and present projects, both in depth and high level, depending on requirements or audience

  • Operate lab equipment and conduct tasks in a safe manner, adhering to established guidelines and applicable regulations

  • Transfer developed processes to the Manufacturing Team

  • Troubleshoot any technical issues via planning DOE in the manufacturing of competitive lateral flow devices, in support of departmental projects and site objectives

  • Write and revise process document reports and transfer protocols

  • Ability to work with SOPs and Batch Records

  • Knowledgeable of federal and other regulations, e.g. QSR’s, ISO, and FDA

  • Demonstrate commitment to the development, implementation and effectiveness of the Abbott Quality Management System per ISO, FDA, and other regulatory agencies

  • Understands and is aware of the quality and business consequences which may occur from the improper performance of their specific job. Has awareness of device defects that may occurring their area of responsibility, including product design, verification and validation, manufacturing and testing activities

  • Responsible for exhibiting professional behavior with both internal/external business associates that reflects positively on the company and is consistent with the company’s policies and practices



  • A minimum of 10+ years (BA/BS), 3+ years (MS) or 2+ years (PhD) in lateral flow product development, immunoassay development or related discipline with laboratory work directly applicable to duties

  • Strong computer skills with MS Office applications, QMS, ERP, and statistical software

  • Strong statistical skills are required using JPM or other statistical software


  • Experiences in conjugation methods using colloidal gold, or other new detection system with antibody and antigen

  • Strong technical writing skills including documentation to support the Quality System (Planned Deviations, Unplanned Deviations, CAPAs, technical justifications)

  • Equipment such as BioDot, dipping machine, and spraying machine validation experience

  • Six Sigma and Green Belt training

  • Relevant work experience will include project leadership, planning, and execution

  • Excellent presentation, written, and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to solve challenging problems and deal with a variety of topics in complex situations

  • Demonstrated skills in carrying out innovative research with minimal guidance in an accurate and effective manner
