SDSU Research Foundation Part-Time Research Physical Therapist in San Diego, California

This position will be exclusively teleworking.

Under the immediate supervision of the Principal Investigators, the Research Physical Therapist will carry out activities related to training, adaptation, implementation and documentation of the telehealth CBPT intervention at FHCSD and CSDP. In addition, the Research Physical Therapist will participate in research team meetings related to the intervention and participate in interpretation and dissemination of the study findings. Fully remote web conferencing options exist for Research Physical Therapists who reside outside of San Diego or Imperial County.

The Research Physical Therapist is responsible for but not limited to the following duties:

Training and Implementation of a Telehealth Cognitive Behavioral Physical Therapy Intervention 70%

Participate in training to implement a standardized telehealth physical therapy examination and intervention protocol. CEUs are available for training at no cost. Achieve acceptable performance on assessments related to administering the intervention. Participate in regular quality checks to ensure the fidelity of the interventions. Participate in the adaptation, implementation, and documentation of the standardized and manualized telehealth physical therapy intervention protocol for patients with chronic spine pain. Administer physical therapy treatments onsite at SDSU HealthLINK facilities in San Diego and Imperial Counties, by video web conferencing, and by telephone. Fully remote web conferencing and telephone options exist for training and treatment sessions for Research Physical Therapists who reside outside of San Diego or Imperial County.

Administration and Data Management 20%

Maintain interaction with the Principal Investigators, Program Coordinator, and other research staff as necessary, to ensure the integrity of research activities; participate in regular research staff meetings to foster collaborative problem solving. Assist in the management of data including clinical documentation of CBPT sessions, reviewing and responding to quality checks on treatment fidelity, and reviewing study intervention protocols.

Interpretation and Dissemination of Findings 5%

Assist with the interpretation and dissemination of findings from the study. Prepare progress reports and deliver presentations related to the studies as needed (national and local). Disseminate the findings individually or as part of the group to a variety of stakeholders and professional groups. Participate in training clinical partners to apply the adapted CBPT approach in the clinical management of Hispanics/Latinos with chronic spine pain.

Other Duties and Responsibilities as Assigned 5%

Knowledge

  • Thorough knowledge of the theories, principles and methods of physical therapy; physical effects resulting from various types of physical therapy treatments; skeletal anatomy and the basic pathology involved in diseases or injuries resulting in physical and mental disorders; operation of various therapeutic devices and machines; and state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to the practice of physical therapy and patient confidentiality. General knowledge of the construction and use of therapeutic appliances and equipment suitable for home use and injuries encountered in athletic programs.

    Abilities

  • Ability to effectively administer various types of physical therapy; teach patients the fundamentals of self-care and other suitable activities; interpret physical therapy treatments and teach others the treatments which must be continued at home; use applicable automated systems to maintain records and prepare reports and case histories; analyze situations accurately and promptly seek emergency support when needed; maintain patient confidentiality as required under applicable state and federal laws and regulations; maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff and be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients.

Minimum Education

  • Graduate of a professional physical therapy degree program of an accredited postsecondary institution or other institutions or programs approved by the Physical Therapy Board of California.

License and Certifications

  • Possess and maintain a valid license as a Registered Physical Therapist issued by the Physical Therapy Board of California

Preferred:

  • 2-years of experience in orthopedic clinical physical therapy practice

  • Experience with research software programs such as RED Cap, SPSS, EndNote and MS Office Suite
