Intermountain Healthcare Medical Director, Neonatology Level II NICU/Special Care Nursery in Salt Lake City, Utah

Job Description:

Provides leadership and strategic medical direction for Neonatal Intensive Medicine within a level II NICU (SCN) to advance performance in each of Intermountain Healthcare’s Fundamentals of Extraordinary Care. This position will champion provider growth and development, innovation, continuous improvement, and will be accountable to achieve NICU specific and Neonatology related system goals.


The Medical Director for Neonatal Intensive Medicine is a facility leadership role with system-wide participation expectations reporting to the Senior Medical Director of Obstetrics/Neonatal Operations with accountability for neonatal care within the level II NICU. The Medical Director is responsible for several core areas; 1) Clinical leadership for the facility’s neonatal clinicians/providers (Neonatologists/Neonatal APP’s/Pediatricians) 2) Management of clinical operations for Level II NICU within the facility 3) Partners with obstetric leaders to facilitate smooth transitions of care around the time of birth, with neonatology around transitions to and from higher levels of neonatal care and with outpatient providers assuming care of the newborn in the outpatient setting 4) Partners with hospital obstetric and pediatric leaders to optimize quality, safety, and operations of newborn care within the hospital 5) Partners with Obstetric/Neonatal Operations Neonatal Leadership to develop system-wide standards for neonatal care 6) Educates neonatology, newborn (pediatric/family practice) and obstetric providers practicing within the hospital about system-wide neonatal practice standards.

The Medical Director works collaboratively with Neonatology and Newborn leaders across Intermountain Healthcare including Specialty-Based Care (OB/Neo Operations), Clinical Programs, Clinical Services, Office of Patient Experience, Hospital Administration, Hospital CMO, Intermountain Medical Group and Select Health. Physician shall be credentialed and privileged on the medical staff of an Intermountain Hospital with a level II NICU and will have a clinical practice spending approximately 16 hours/month on administrative duties and the remainder of their time providing clinical care and supporting providers (Pediatricians/Neonatal APP’s/ Neonatologists) practicing at their home hospital. Reports to Senior Medical Director of Obstetric/Neonatal Operations.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Provide medical direction for all neonatal services within the hospital, emphasizing safety, quality, patient experience, access, stewardship, engaged caregivers, and smart growth.

  • Lead and inspire a culture of success, collaboration, teamwork and dedication by all team members including physicians, APP’s, nurses, technicians and all staff members.

  • Develop collaborative models for transitions of care around the time of birth, around transitions to and from higher levels of neonatal care and transitions to the outpatient setting.

  • Participate in strategic development and growth of neonatal care programs and initiatives, focused on a holistic, integrated approach to clinical care.

  • Participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings as well as system-wide Neonatology Medical Director and Neonatology Department Meetings.

  • Implement best practices around staffing, Level II NICU operations, peer review, and quality improvement.

  • Participate in the development and implementation of evidence-based care processes and best-practices, team-based care, including use of APP’s and telehealth to support value and risk-based payment models.

  • Communicate and educate local teams about system-wide initiatives including but not limited to evidence-based care processes.

  • Lead documentation and coding efforts; physician conversations, education, understanding.

  • Work in close partnership with leadership of hospital operations and OB/Neo Operations to optimize safety and quality and reduce variation in neonatal/newborn care in hospitals across the system.

  • Collaborate with unit leadership (manager, shared RN leaders) for NICU quality assurance and clinical performance.

  • Review unit specific data regularly.

  • Work in close partnership with local hospital leadership in obstetrics, pediatrics, family medicine and emergency medicine to optimize quality and safety of newborn care within the hospital.

  • Address performance concerns for providers, including peer review.

  • Review and sign credentialing packets.

  • Address inappropriate or unprofessional behavior.

  • Participate in system-wide neonatal peer review

  • Work in concert with administrative leadership to ensure regulatory and safety compliance in clinical activities.

  • Oversee related research initiatives in collaboration with Office of Research; evaluate most effective processes and treatments and publishes results.

  • Provide specialty specific review and/or consultation as requested by SelectHealth.

  • Provide specialty specific consultation as requested by Care Transformation/Information Systems.

Minimum Requirements

  • M.D or D.O. with residency training and Board Certification in Pediatrics. Degree must be obtained through an accredited institution. Education is verified.

  • Licensed or able to be licensed to practice Medicine in the State of Utah.

  • Holds active privileges or qualified to be credentialed at an Intermountain Hospital and SelectHealth.

  • Certified in Neonatal Resuscitation Program.

  • Must be able to demonstrate effective leadership skills and the ability to work effectively and collegially with clinical and non-clinical staff to move others to action and model the vision and values of the organization.

  • 3-5 years of clinical experience with progressive leadership experience in a level II NICU.

  • Exceptional verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Exceptional character and integrity and commitment to mission, vision, and values of Intermountain Healthcare.
