L3Harris in Rochester, NY is looking for an experienced Mechanical/Hardware Engineer. Primary Engineering responsibility is for mechanical design support of optical handling equipment, optical testing equipment, processing support equipment and facilities/ machine upgrades. Utilizes basic technical standards, principles, theories and concepts to meet specific job assignments. May be assigned the overall engineering responsibility for a project or part of a project depending on size, scope and complexity. A Mechanical Engineer at this level will have a basic knowledge of materials that would allow him/her to choose the ideal material for a design based upon thermal and mechanical properties. This Mechanical Engineer will be capable of using engineering equations or FEA analysis tools to determine stress/strain and deflection properties of components within a design as needed. Also, this engineer is required to make on-site judgment calls about strengths of materials and durability of designs. In addition, this engineer will be able to draw or convey concepts for solutions to peer groups and estimate a cost and lead time for such a concept. Finally, this Mechanical Engineer is required to have a basic knowledge of manufacturing processes in order to create designs that can be manufactured with available equipment and to arrive at solutions to fabrication problems.
Essential Functions:
Primary function is to perform all drafting requirements using 3D modeling software – current platform is Creo 4.0 and data management tool Agile.
Proficient knowledge of Industry and Military drafting standards and practices, specifically ASME Y14.5-2009 and ASME Y14.100
Prepare manufacturing drawings of product components by drawing graphic representations of products adding standard details and creation of bills of material.
Work with different groups such as Test Engineers, Process Engineers, Facilities, EHS, Shop Operators and Machinists.
Generate complex new drawings and other documentation from sketches, models, marked documents and verbal instructions
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience, or 2 years post-Secondary/ Associates Degree and a minimum of 6 years of prior related experience, or Graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience.
4+ years’ experience working in mechanical design using CREO or similar 3D modeling software.
2+ years’ experience with application of Geometric Dimension and Tolerancing (GD&T).
Preferred Additional Skills:
Demonstrates appropriate computer knowledge in basic Microsoft Office software applications
Active TS/SCI Clearance
Drawing and CAD Model checking experience
Experience in the Aerospace or Defense industry
Works well in a team environment
Effectively organizes and communicates
Speaks clearly and concisely, presenting ideas effectively to individuals or groups
Previous experience with assembly layouts and concepts and knowledge of applicable government and industry standards
Familiarity with electronics, structural or mechanism designs
Able and willing to do some original design work
Advanced knowledge of Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFM/DFMA)
Strong mechanical aptitude and general understanding of manufacturing and assembly techniques
Previous experience in supporting the design of ground structures, mechanisms, electronics packaging, and/or composite structures
