Role Summary

The Manager of Fleet Engineering is responsible for implementing initiatives to improve safety and the technical performance of systems within the Air Transportation Association (ATA) responsibility. The position oversees the day-to-day operation of the engineering department ensuring that high standards of engineering documentation and timely responses to requests for engineering action are maintained. This leadership role supports safety and technical performance of the fleet for Horizon Air.

Key Duties

  • Manages, controls, directs, and coordinates the activities of the department, with emphasis on improving and maintaining the highest level of safety, reliability, quality, and cost efficiencies.

  • Champions technical reliability for the fleet and develops project plans to accomplish fleet initiatives, including the business case process for financial approval of expenditures relating to the project.

  • Monitors fleet and individual aircraft for recurring problems and, when such problems are identified, develops a plan to correct them and address root cause of systematic problems.

  • Acts as technical liaison between the Company’s maintenance and the manufacturers to report aircraft, system, and component anomalies.

  • Administers, implements, and develops the Time Control System (TRAX) for all scheduled inspections, programs work packages, components, accessories, engine services, structural inspections, new aircraft acquisition, and program enhancements.

  • Ensures areas of responsibility meet Company quality expectations through continuous review and improvement, and active participation in the Continuous Analysis & Surveillance Review (CAS) Program.

  • Participates in vendor and OEM conferences, operator working groups, and with suppliers to maintain contact with the industry, and keep abreast of any product or system improvements. Reviews any product deficiencies with the supplier, OEM, or vendor to ensure they compensate or improve the product for the benefit of the Company.

  • Provides technical assistance as required to address aircraft in-service issues.

  • Recommends changes to the maintenance program as necessary to correct aircraft system and component trends.

  • Reviews Engineering Orders prior to release and monitors engineering documents and processes for quality and compliance with all applicable Federal Aviation Regulations and Company policies and procedures

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills


  • 5 years of experience in maintenance or operations working on different types of large aircraft (with 10 or more seats) with an air carrier and/or manufacturer.

  • Bachelor’s degree in aeronautical, mechanical engineering or related focus, or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree.

  • Working knowledge of appropriate maintenance and airworthiness requirements of 14 CFR Parts 1, 21, 25, 43, 45, 47, 65, 91, 119, and 121

  • Experience working directly with the FAA in a professional manner on air carrier maintenance or engineering related subjects

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum age of 18.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
