We are recruiting for a new R&D Engineer II to join our team. This role will be located in Plymouth, MN. This is an exciting opportunity to join Abbott's fast-growing Structural Heart business, home of the life-saving Amplatzer family of medical devices. In this role, you will be focused on the delivery system development of a cardiac occlude from concept to commercialization by supporting the design and development process.
Researches, develops, designs, and evaluates mechanical materials, components, assemblies, processes and/or equipment
Conducts feasibility studies to verify capability and functionality
Develops new concepts from initial design to market release
Maintains detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and development
Investigates and evaluates existing technologies
Reviews or coordinates vendor activities to support development
Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors
Work with internal departments and outside vendors to obtain prototype parts
Under the guidance from a Senior Engineer, generate design improvement concepts to meet specific design goals
Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments.
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical, or other related discipline
2+ years of experience in R&D engineering environment, including experience writing test methods, model development and identifying potential issues with designs
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of a variety of engineering disciplines, theories and concepts, to support development of innovative approaches to problem solving
Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization
Advanced Degree(s) in Science, Engineering, and/or related discipline
Previous experience designing and testing medical devices
Manufacturing process experience working with catheter and delivery systems
Metals experience a plus – stainless steel and nitinol material – including processing and evaluation methods
Solidworks or other CAD experience
