Position Description :
The Emergency Department Technician is an integral member of the health care team who delivers quality care through collaboration and communication with team members. They work under the direct supervision of the registered nurse to support and assist the nurse in the delivery of quality care to patients and families. Some of the major responsibilities will include collection and reporting of patient data, incorporating organizational competencies of superior quality care, and assuming responsibility and accountability for their role performance outcomes while supporting UPHS’s Standards of Excellence.
Minimum Requirements :
• High school diploma and previous ED experience preferred.
• Must be a paramedic (EMT-P).
• ACLS and CPR required.

The Emergency Department of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) is located in the heart of University City in West Philadelphia and has an annual volume of over 72,000 patients a year. The patient population is diverse, as the ED functions as the major tertiary care center for the entire Philadelphia region. There is a high level of acuity in the HUP ED with an admission rate of 22%, representing 30-35% of the admissions to the hospital. The Emergency Department is a 43-bed unit. The Psychiatric Emergency Evaluation Center (PEEC) has 3 observation beds and can care for a maximum of 6 patients at a time. The Emergency Department nurses care for a diverse population of patients requiring many levels of care. These patients require the nurse to be competent in a myriad of skill sets which range from the care of the critically ill to the fast track population.
