Bon Secours Mercy Health Switchboard Operator - 32 hours per week - rotation of all shifts in Petersburg, Virginia

This is a full time position working 32 hours per week. Must be able to work all 3 shifts - day, evening, and night shift. Must also be able to work weekends and holidays.

I. PRIMARY FUNCTION/GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

According to prescribed policies and procedures, operates hospital multiple position switchboard to relay incoming, outgoing, and inter-office calls. Responsible for providing patient information to outside callers and operating the paging service. Handles Answering Service calls for physicians. Responds to alarms and codes by notifying appropriate personnel. Performs other duties as assigned. Attend meeting and educational classes as required.

II. EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Work requires the ability to read, write, follow oral and written instructions, and communicates effectively at a level generally acquired through completion of a high school education.

  2. Work requires the ability to employ tact and courtesy at all times to patients, visitors, co-workers, and other hospital employees.

  3. Work requires keyboard skills and general personal computer skills using a mouse. In addition, familiarity with department policies and procedures and medical terminology at a level generally acquired through at least six months on-the-job training.

  4. Work requires strong communication skills, a pleasant voice, and a professional appearance in representing the Communications Department to physicians, staff, and patients.

  5. Work requires analytical ability necessary to initiate procedures for emergency situations, such as fire, code blue, disaster drills, and security emergencies.

  6. Work requires interpersonal skills and a customer service orientation necessary to answer calls and relay messages and communicate effectively with internal and external callers in a calm, tactful manner.

III. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Answers and connects incoming calls to patients and hospital staff, using discretionary judgment. Responds to callers’ questions and requests, including patient information and telephone assistance, in a courteous and businesslike fashion.
