Internal Revenue Service Statistical Assistant (Statistical Support Technician) in Ogden, Utah

Summary WHAT IS THE WAGE AND INVESTMENTDIVISION?The Wage & Investment Division (W&I) serves about 122 million taxpayers who file upwards of 94 million returns each year. Responsibilities WHAT DOES A STATISTICAL ASSISTANT DO? Statistical Assistants serve as a technical liaison to advocate the requirements of a statistical study directed by the Statistics of Income (SOI) Division, National Headquarters. They assist in assignments that cover any technical aspects of the job affecting the planning, implementation, or completion of statistical projects.Perform error resolution of computational and tax law-based consistency tests. Assist in the evaluation of quantitative data to determine the relative effectiveness of various approaches to redesigning IRS work processes. Statistical Assistantsare also responsible for assisting in providing information and exercising judgment in making decisions that may affect the quality of the data. As a Statistical Assistant you will: Assist in collecting, analyzing, and disseminating information on Federal taxation for economic and financial analysis. Specify methods used to collect data, write appropriate procedures, review computer system specifications, and prepare materials and instructions needed to ensure the adequacy of the data collection process. Serve as a member of a group performing special assignments and work with higher-graded analysts to assist with the planning, initiating, developing, implementing, controlling, modifying, and executing statistical projects on Federal taxation for economic and financial analysis. Often work independently on segments of the assigned statistical projects. Provide advice and assistance to other specialists assigned to the statistical study, such as economists, statisticians, computer specialists, and programmers. Perform extensive systems acceptability testing (SAT) for on-line data entry systems using specifications developed for the statistical project. Assist with training SOI editors by preparing training materials needed, instructing certain aspects of the data collection and error resolution process. Evaluate the effectiveness of training by performing quality review on returns edited after training, developing job aids to supplement and clarify difficult instructions, and conducting periodic refresher training. Conduct individual and group training on interpreting SOI editing instructions for specific consistency tests and/or fields. Assist in identifying, locating, and acquiring tax returns or data missing from the statistical study. Perform error resolution of computational and tax law-based consistency tests. Analyze data for reasonableness and accuracy at the microdata and macrodata level, using several techniques including longitudinal evaluation. Resolve data inconsistencies. Contact and correspond with taxpayers to ensure the accuracy of information. Assist in the evaluation of quantitative data to determine the relative effectiveness of various approaches to redesigning IRS work processes. Participate in the tabulation of production data for SOI customers. Perform other duties as assigned.
