Position Objective

This position is responsible for maintaining the New Haven Catenary System as well as managing a unionized workforce in accordance with Metro-North Railroad, Power Department and FRA maintenance standards. In addition, the position ensures system reliability and compliance with safety to continue providing a safe environment for our employees and customers, consistent with corporate goals.


Direct and manage the maintenance and operation of the Overhead AC Power system.

Direct agreement workforce throughout the catenary territory and provide face to face interaction with field supervision.

Ensure workforce compliance with on-track protection protocols in accordance with MNR, FRA and electrical requirements.

Conduct audits for compliance with FRA mandated efficiency testing.

Report directly to the Assistant Deputy Director New Haven Catenary on issues pertaining to maintenance activities, capital projects and union related matters.

Act as primary point of contact for electrical related project issues.

Conduct audits of maintenance activities to insure compliance with department and OSHA standards and utility practices.

Direct and reinforce safety programs for catenary work group in accordance with corporate programs and vision.

Ensure workforce compliance to safety programs including audit, training and testing of employees.

Assist the Assistant Deputy Director NH OHL (Catenary) in planning construction projects for capital/non-capital work.

Research, evaluate and introduce innovations in work methods and equipment.

Coordinate with Training Department and Supervision to ensure that trainees are completing their training on schedule.

Ensure compliance with Power Department policies and procedures for electrical safety.

Participate in interview process to fill vacancies in the Traction Distribution Department.

Required Qualifications

Familiarity with the NH overhead AC traction power systems, constant tension catenary systems and signal power systems.

Competent understanding of basic electrical codes, and OSHA standards and utility practices.

Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with internal/external customers, with all levels of non-agreement and agreement staff and to coordinate multiple departments for task completion.

Project management skills to develop project scope, progress, schedules, and budget.

Working knowledge of utility practices and procedures.

Strong verbal presentation and written communication skills.

Strong analytical skills with the ability to resolve complex technical issues.

Strong motivation and self-starter.

Ability to spend considerable time at field sites during and participate in off hours (nights & weekends) work activities or significant cutovers with sub-department Task Managers and their work forces.

Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office suite and/or comparable applications.

Must be able to work in a high-profile/high-pressure environment.

Must be available 24 hours/7 days a week as required.

Valid drivers’ license.

Must be able to implement and participate in Metro-North Railroad’s Safety Program

Required Education/Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field along with the following:

Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the electrical industry, such as engineering experience at an electrified commuter railroad, utility or consultant.

Minimum three (3) years’ experience managing projects and/or a diverse unionized workforce.


Minimum of nine (9) years of combined experience and education/technical credentials in the electrical industry. Relevant experience may include work performed for electrified commuter railroad, utility or consultant. Education or technical credentials in the electrical industry (i.e. Associates Degree in Engineering or related field, Trade/Vocational School Certificate, Electrical Apprenticeship) will count towards the required nine (9) years of experience.

Minimum three (3) years’ experience managing projects and/or a diverse unionized workforce.


Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field and completion of the Metro-North Railroad Associate Engineer Program.

Preferred Education/Experience

Knowledge of the collective bargaining process as it relates to discipline.

Knowledge of Metro-North's policies and procedures, accounting, budget and payroll processes.

Knowledge of Metro-North Railroad's Safety Program.

Other Information

This is a federally regulated position subject to both pre-employment and continuous random toxicological screening.

As an employee of Metro-North Railroad you may be required to complete a New York State financial disclosure statement, if you earn more than $101,379.00 or if you hold a position designated as a policy maker.

Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MNR drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.

Additional Criteria for Current Employees: Current Metro-North employees must be in active service to be eligible for consideration. Agreement Employees applying for a position outside of their present craft are required to have worked in your current union for at least one (1) year preceding the Application Deadline to be eligible to apply for a posted position, and have completed the agreed upon formal training commitment, including on-the-job training or lock-in requirement, if applicable (for example: Signal Trainee, Foreman-In-Training, etc.). If you are transferring to another craft, you may be required to forfeit your seniority in your present union. Non-agreement employees must have worked in your current position for a minimum of one (1) year preceding the Application Deadline. Along with a background investigation (including but not limited to, employment, education, and criminal history), employees are also subject to an internal investigation, which includes an evaluation not limited to discipline records and performance assessments.
