Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of the CCTI and the Chief of Staff, the Finance Manager will serve as the business, financial and administrative manager and liaison with the Department of Medicine finance core. Candidate will be responsible for management of all Center financial operations, including the budget, individual laboratory budgets and core business operations, as well as oversight of post award grants management, space management, procurement and overall financial administrative management of the Center. The Center's financial accounts management requires a high level of coordination with multiple divisions within the Center, the Department of Medicine and several other Departments at Columbia University.


  • Leads the Center fiscal planning and preparation of the annual budgets, and updates quarterly budgets in the Budget Tool.

  • Responsible for the financial reporting of the Center accounts to the Director and the Chief of Staff.

  • Serves as the Division's primary financial expert.

  • Monitors Center expenses against budget to ensure no overspending or underspending, and develops plans to address the variances.

  • Monitors Payroll and efforts, Core operations, and individual laboratory financial operations.

  • Assumes full P&L responsibility for the Center and individual labs; prepares and manages the Center budget; and prepares the Center operational and growth financial plans in coordination with the CoS.

  • Supervises post-award administration of sponsored research including effort reporting, preparation, monitoring, and reconciliation of Center budgets within ARC, COB and other general ledger-based accounting systems.

  • Monitors and presents financial plans for research programs to the faculty researchers.

  • Expands and grows the Center by working with programs and project managers overseeing the successful execution of a portfolio of research funding.

  • Proactively ensures high levels of faculty satisfaction by developing and maintaining positive relationships with all members of the Center.

  • Oversees reporting of financial status per lab and overall, prospective financial program evaluation and data collection and analysis with the Director and Chief of Staff.

  • Ensures compliance, accuracy and timely processing of Center finances.

  • Self-educates on the latest developments in research program financial management and funding trends.

  • Coordinates and manages procurement and accounts payable to ensure orderly receipt of supplies orders and vendors paid on time.

  • Works with CCTI Director and Chief of Staff on administrative issues and projects including core management, space charge allocations, facilities, capital equipment, procurement, recruitment, and staff development.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration or related field, plus four years of related experience or equivalent in education, training and experience

  • Experience in an academic and/or clinical setting that includes administration of federal grants

  • Advanced skill level in Excel required.

  • Strong conceptual, financial, and interpersonal skills in addition to a proven record of administrative and financial success.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills are essential.

  • Ability to work diplomatically and collaboratively with all levels of staff and University and Hospital leadership is essential.

  • Strong work initiative and ability to work independently.

  • Strong fiduciary traits, honesty and integrity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA or equivalent Master's degree highly preferred and would substitute for experience

  • Knowledge of university systems a strong plus

  • Successful completion of applicable compliance and systems training requirements
