Job Description

The SG Ventures (SGV) team is focused on identifying, acquiring, building, and executing new growth engines for Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits (SGWS), the world's pre-eminent distributor of beverage alcohol. SG Ventures initiatives explore, test, and incubate new and emerging growth opportunities.


The Director, Commercial Strategy, SG Ventures, is responsible for analyzing and driving new ventures which support SGWS’s growth priorities. These ventures and initiatives can be a mix of strategic partnerships and deals to evaluate as well as new business models and initiatives to scope, develop, and pilot. This individual is also responsible for developing the commercial strategy for SG Venture’s priorities and identifying and evaluating opportunities to support this strategy. The Director will be expected to collaborate with functions and executive leaders across SGWS and externally. The individual must have exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills as well as communication and stakeholder management experience.


  • Lead new ventures and initiatives, including to:

  • Evaluate commercial attractiveness and strategic fit of opportunities and strategic partnerships

  • Develop minimum viable commercial concepts to pilot and identify requirements to pilot

  • Drive pilot, including developing and tracking KPIs, documenting new processes and best practices, and managing risks

  • Evaluate pilot success and provide recommendation to pivot or move forward

  • Develop roadmap and resourcing plan for next phases

  • Act as the key point of contact for the initiatives, internally and externally

  • Manage and communicate with stakeholders, as necessary

  • Drive the commercial evaluation and strategic analysis on growth M&A opportunities, advise on structure, and drive commercial process before and after close

  • Conduct primary research and leverage secondary research to support strategy development and opportunity evaluation

  • Identify the strategic options to support SG Venture priorities

  • Develop presentations and analyses required to drive commercial decisions, particularly at the Executive level

  • Collaborate and coordinate with SG Ventures team members, cross-functional leaders, and external leaders and working teams

  • Develop new processes, ways of working, and frameworks to support new opportunities



  • Experience leading strategic initiatives, developing and executing new business models, and/or driving new commercial initiatives

  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Strong communication and presentation skills, specifically creating presentations in Microsoft Power Point

  • Experience working in collaborative team environment

  • Experience developing models and driving analysis in Microsoft Excel

  • Ability to excel in ambiguous and fast paced unstructured environment


  • Bachelor's Degree Required (business administration, finance, engineering, or other industry related curriculum)

  • MBA Preferred


  • 10+ years of professional post-graduate experience

  • Strategy, Management Consulting, Venture Capital, or related experience

  • 5+ years in leadership roles working with key executive stakeholders

  • Experience working in a dynamic fast paced agile environment


  • Domestic travel, up to 35%
