The New York Public Library Outreach Services Program Assistant in Manhattan, New York
The Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library, part of The New York Public Library, serves patrons who are eligible to borrow materials from the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) in the five boroughs of New York City and Long Island. The Library is seeking an Outreach Assistant to build connections and increase awareness of and enrollment in library services for people with print disabilities in New York’s Spanish speaking communities. The incumbent should be a creative and organized community-builder and an adept communicator, with cultural competencies and a passion for helping people with disabilities explore resources in ways that allow them to follow their interests and discover new ones.
Researches, makes contact with, and creates collaborations with community organizations that serve Spanish-speaking New Yorkers
Performs community outreach throughout the 5 boroughs of NYC and within NYPL to promote and increase public participation and use of Andrew Heiskell library services, Representing the library at meetings, programs, speaking engagements, fairs and other venues targeting Spanish speaking communities
Tracks and reports on outreach activities, progress, and patron needs
Creatively seeks to identify new avenues of service and outreach
Assists in planning and executing targeted programs for this population
Provides welcome calls and basic information to Spanish speaking patrons
Answers questions from the public in person, over the telephone and electronically
Responsible for Spanish language social media outreach where appropriate
Works to create sustainable practices in service for the future
Performs other related duties as required
Bachelor’s degree required, preferably with a strong, well-rounded liberal arts background, or a community-based background (ie social work, education, community organizing)
Successfully demonstrated public service experience with the ability to work well with a diverse patronage
Successfully demonstrated interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
Successfully demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
Strong organization and planning skills, including the ability to perform multiple projects or tasks simultaneously
Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports
Strong computer and other related technology skills, including MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Google applications, PCs, Macs and e-reader devices
Spanish Fluency
Experience creating, conducting and/or participating in community outreach preferred
Experience working with the diverse cultures and neighborhoods of NYC, and/or with immigrants, preferred
Be Helpful to patrons and colleagues
Be Resourceful in solving problems
Be Curious in all aspects of your work
Public service library (virtual for now)
Lifting up to 15 lbs.
Sitting and standing for periods of time
Daily use of a computer
Will require travel within NYC
USD $20.00/Hr.
19 hours per week, from March 1st through Dec 31st 2021. Some weekends and evenings may be required
