IBM Engagement Architect in Madrid, Spain

Your Role and Responsibilities

The role of Engagement Architect is the technical leader position responsible for the solution design of technical solutions proposed to Infrastructure Services customers.

They spend up to 20-40% of their time interfacing directly with the client. They are responsible for the overall success of the solution design and cost development at the technology and architecture level.

They provide leadership and initiative to design new and complex high-quality solutions to clients in response to varying business requirements. They incorporate in-depth knowledge of leading-edge products and technology in conjunction with industry and business results.

They utilize a combination of IBM standard and custom solutions and they develop complex, multiple year, custom solutions and associated cost cases, all with the goal to ensure consistent delivery of high-quality services and/or solutions which meet client business and technical requirements and fulfil IBM's obligations.

They are a key player within the engagement team collaborating on innovative ideas using proven approaches to deliver a winning solution. Most of the time they will also be responsible for leading the coordination of the various technical professionals and providers participating in an engagement.

They present, review and modify the solution, with the internal/external client and key stakeholders, to meet deal requirements which match the client's and IBM's tactical and strategic requirements and to close the deal.

Engagement Architects, like most IT Architects, have a foundational skill set which are the common language to ensure collaboration. They include:

  • Architecture Methodology: TOGAF, Architectural Thinking, UML, typical Work Products

  • Soft Skills: Communication, Negotiation, Leadership

  • Project Management Skills

  • Process know-how

  • Industry insight

As the accountable role for the end-to-end solution design, Engagement Architects technological knowledge must be as broad as possible both in Standard and Innovative Technologies for Infrastructure Services.

By being an Engagement Architect, you will have the opportunity and be required to continuously upgrade knowledge and skills, learn & practice architectural and core technology domain knowledge for your role, learn and use common architectural terminology and work-products, improve client leadership, communication and other core soft skills.

Professionals opting to the Engagement Architect position should have 5+ years of experience in the IT Industry with at least 2 years of experience in producing Architectures and technical solutions and 1 year in technically leading engagements for new clients.

An Infrastructure Services Engagement Architect must have demonstrable experience leading small teams to define the structure of solutions and architectures to address client business problems; must prove experience in understanding client needs, applying industry knowledge, and leveraging appropriate business elements and information technology to address those needs.

You must have engagement experiences in which you:

  • Involved the application and integration of a variety of elements that came together to produce the technical solution Utilized multiple and diverse technologies

  • Assessed the integrity and risks inherent in a proposed solution against the underlying business intent, so that the recommendations and findings were appropriate, were acceptable to the client, and could be implemented

  • Performed the sizing and estimated configuration of the solution to be applied

  • Performed the labor estimations to carry out the project

  • Described the technical solution with clear and detailed wording

  • Presented the technical solution to customers

Building Enterprise skills are essential for today's IT Architect. Agile, Design Thinking, Analytics, Industry and People skills are integral to progression in the Architect Profession roadmap.

It is preferred if you can also demonstrate experience in the following activities:

  • Developed approach and plans for architectural engagements and ensured that the approach and plans for delivery of the architecture were driven from and support the defined architecture. This project planning activity was carried out for complex projects.

  • Mastered the application of consulting techniques in a client environment. Presented the rationale so that stakeholders accepted the choices and agreed with the rationale.

  • Mediated opposing viewpoints and negotiated equitable outcomes to ensure successful and stable progress toward delivering the business intent.

  • Applied effective written and verbal communication skills in articulating architectural deliverables in a client environment.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

You must have experience as a technical leader on at least one major bid, contract negotiation, or business case development effort where your role was technical leader.

Required experience in designing solutions with at least 2 of the following technologies:

  • Software Defined Data Center Solutions

  • Public and private cloud solutions. E.g. IBM Cloud, AWS, Azure, VmWare

  • IT Tools and Service Management solutions

  • Container platform solutions

  • DevOps solutions and architecture patterns

  • T Automation platforms and solutions

Bachelor or Master's degree in Technical or scientific field.

Spanish and English fluent. Minimum English level B2.

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

In addition, preferred technical expertise in the following range of technologies:

  • Cloud Native IT Ops Technologies

  • Cloud Native Architecture Patterns

  • Orchestration & Provisioning

  • Container Plaform technologies

  • Private Cloud Design & Implementation

  • Server Consolidation Projects

  • Software Defined Network projects
