SSM Health Underwriter in Madison, Wisconsin

The Underwriting Coordinator prepares, screens, and documents applications for assigned line of business and provides clerical support and project assistance to the Underwriting Department.

Responsible for coordinating and completing the review and rating process of experience rated large group new business and renewals. Evaluation of complex large group provision requests. Produce various management reports, and maintain department databases and Underwriting files.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Preview new business experience rated prospect risk reviews and new business submissions including detailed analysis of claims experience, requested eligibility provisions, employer contribution and disclosed medical risk to determine acceptance (with or without a risk load) based upon Underwriting guidelines and consistent with Dean Health Plan’s risk tolerance.

  • Analyze and recommend renewal rates and terms for experience rated renewals. Assess the risk load through risk review. Review all data collected for renewal based on assessment of the benefits, network, census, and proposed changes to offer recommendation for final renewal rates. Communicate full renewal findings to Retention Team and externally to agent/employer group upon request.

  • Support the review of renewals for compliance with Actuarial factors and pricing strategies to produce the necessary profit margins.

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual Risk Tracking Reports and reconciliations.

  • Review complex large group provision change requests based on established Underwriting guidelines; implement the changes that are approved.

  • Provide backup and overflow support to the other Financial Underwriters.

  • Conduct projects and participate in team activities to identify problems and improve work processes and systems.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor Degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics or other business related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience combined.

EXPERIENCE

  • Four year's risk selection experience, with two year's experience in the health insurance field.
