CENTER X TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM

Secondary FACULTY ADVISOR (Science or Math)

TYPE OF POSITION: Lecturer (50%-100% time)

DESCRIPTION: The Secondary Faculty Advisor works with graduate-level students enrolled in the UCLA Teacher Education Program. Candidates in TEP pursue a preliminary teaching credential and a Master’s degree in Education. Faculty Advisors are professional program faculty who support the learning of teacher education students through teaching and field support. They also contribute to the development of the TEP Program through committee work and their work in communities and schools. Further, this work necessitates a willingness to support and potentially engage in teacher education research. This position is supported by a federally funded grant.

QUALIFICATIONS (Required): We are currently searching for an Advisor to work with graduate students completing their master’s degree. The qualified candidate must have experience with teacher education programs as well as K-12 schooling. Expertise in science or math instruction is required. The successful candidate must have demonstrated an interest in educational reform in urban schooling, and have experience with blending theory and practice in educational environments. Qualified candidates must demonstrate excellence in the teaching of pre-service and beginning teachers.

Required Qualifications:

● Commitment to promoting social justice in urban schools

● Master’s degree required. Doctorate strongly preferred

● Minimum of 5 years of secondary school teaching experience in urban school settings (preferably

teaching in California)

● Expertise in science education or math education

● Experience in instructional leadership

● Experience mentoring and/or coaching beginning teachers

● Understanding of critical theory and transformative pedagogies

● Knowledge of current policies and initiatives influencing public schools

● Understanding of current state and national frameworks and standards

● Ability to clearly articulate the connections among educational theory, research and classroom

practice

● Automobile and valid CA driver’s license required

Preferred Qualifications:

● Experience supporting graduate students completing a master’s degree.

● Knowledge of research methods

● Experience in supervising student teachers

● Ability to supervise bilingual candidates in the field (Spanish) and/or Bilingual authorization

preferred

● Experience leading professional development

● Doctoral degree strongly preferred

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching: The Secondary Science or Math Faculty Advisor will teach quarterly including master’s level courses, seminars, content methods, education foundations, and signature academic courses. Seminar courses that provide opportunities for students to bring together what they are learning in their coursework and their field experiences. Methodology courses focus on developing students’ content-specific pedagogies. Foundations courses, such as language acquisition, educational psychology, and social foundations, help students deepen their understanding of theories of learning and urban schooling.

Field Support: The Secondary Faculty Advisor is required to provide regular, on-site field support for TEP students. They/she/he are responsible for supervising and coordinating all field activities for their/her/his students.

TEP Program Support:

● Committee work: The Secondary Faculty Advisor participates in committee work to support UCLA TEP and attends all TEP Meetings.

● Connections: The Secondary Faculty Advisor serves as a liaison between the university and the K-12 communities it serves. They/he/she is responsible for developing relationships with partner schools and districts, including meeting regularly with school/community partners to inform program improvement.

● Curriculum: The Secondary Faculty Advisor is responsible for working in partnership with the TEP team to design curriculum in response to state and federal standards, guidelines, and mandates, and the grant.

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: July 1 – June 30, with the possibility of renewal.
