Los Alamos National Laboratory Special Materials Machinist 3/4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Special Materials Machinist 3/4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking individuals who are interested in providing operational support for daily machining operations of nuclear materials at TA-55. The primary function is to fabricate components that support programmatic activities in support of national defense. Typical customer products range from rapid prototypes for research and development, to weapon-related components. Materials include both nuclear materials as well as standard engineering materials. This position will report to the First Line Manager (FLM) for Machining Operations and will assist in establishing priorities for each shop and provide feedback to group management to resolve priority conflict issues. The successful candidates will interface with various customers across Weapons Production, LANL and external organizations, and will be expected to:

Special Materials Machinist 3 ($62,800-$99,800)

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide knowledge of CNC-machining support for the fabrication of Special Nuclear Material (SNM) components at TA-55 across multiple national security programs.

  • Execute programming, setting up, operating and maintaining manual and CNC mills and lathes, for example: Moore T-base and L-base lathes, DMU mills, Hardinge lathes, HAAS mills and lathes, Mazak lathes, Bridgeport mills, Bourn and Koch lathes, Bourn and Koch mill/turn, Republic-Lagun CNC saw, Haas 5-axis mills and various shop tools.

  • Designs or assists in the design of testing experiments and diagnostic equipment.

  • Fits and assembles precision parts into mechanical equipment and determines material, parts, and equipment required.

  • Monitors and verifies in-process quality control and inspection in accordance with statistical process or other control procedures. Identifies root causes for discrepancies.

  • Acquire and maintain certifications/qualifications including: Glovebox Worker 2, Fissile Material Handler (FMH), PF-4 Machining Operator, PF-3 Cold Shop Machining Operator, and various machine specific OJTs.

Special Materials Machinist 4 ($75,400- $122,900)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the Special Materials Machinist 4 will be required to:

  • Provide expert level CNC-machining support for the fabrication of Special Nuclear Material (SNM) components at TA-55 across multiple national security programs.

  • Provide input to manufacturing process improvement including: equipment selection, order of operations, fixture design, tooling optimization, NC programming, and in-process measurement.

  • Participate in lean projects to improve workstation layout and process optimization.

  • Acquire and maintain certifications/qualifications including: Glovebox Worker 2, Fissile Material Handler (FMH), PF-4 Machining Operator, PF-3 Cold Shop Machining Operator, and various machine specific OJTs.

  • Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting systems and/or equipment.

  • Requires completion of a formal machinist apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.

  • Ability to quickly develop working knowledge performing Safety Management Level ML determinations.

Additional Job Requirements for Special Materials Machinist 4:

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Special Materials Machinist 4 level requires:

  • Expert knowledge and experience with mechanical design, installation, testing, repair, and maintenance.

  • Expert skills in the preparation and presentation of mechanical systems/equipment testing and reporting.

  • Expert Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting systems and/or equipment.

  • Requires completion of a formal machinist apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.

  • Ability to quickly develop working knowledge performing Safety Management Level ML determinations,

  • Accredited Journeyman license or Associates degree in a Machine Tool Trades discipline and at least six (6) years of related experience producing parts in a prototype or production manufacturing discipline.

  • Demonstrated ability to program, setup and run a variety of CNC machine tools.

  • Ability to communicate effectively through oral and written methods.

  • Foundational understanding of applied shop mathematics and computer skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and solve complex problems within the framework of a diverse team.

  • Ability to interpret and understand technical requirements contained in blueprints, CAD models, work instructions, and process travelers.

  • In-depth understanding of GD&T principles.

  • Expert experience performing precision measurements to adjust process parameters and ensure finished part quality.

  • Strong understanding of metalworking theory and applied materials science.

  • Demonstrated ability to write, read, and edit G-code.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with medium or high hazard machining operations.

  • Familiarity with Aerotech, FANUC, Siemens, and HAAS machine controllers.

  • Ability to program parts using CAD/CAM software (Creo Manufacture or Mastercam).

  • Ability to program and perform in process measurements using probing routines.

  • Experience performing machine tool setup and calibration (Laser alignment and BallBar test equipment)

  • Experience with configuration management systems for controlling NC code.

  • Understanding of computer programming languages, python, C++, etc.

  • DOE Q clearance.

Special Materials Machinist 3 Education Required:

  • 426.2 DOE order requires a high school diploma or equivalent AND

  • Accredited journey-person qualification OR program-qualified equivalency consisting of 10 years of experience in any machine trade discipline with 4-6 years of this experience in an area of scientific or engineering technology.

  • Certificate or associates degree preferred

Special Materials Machinist 4 Education Required:

  • 426.2 DOE order requires a high school diploma or equivalent AND

  • Accredited journey-person qualification OR program qualified equivalency consisting of 15 years of experience in any machine trade discipline, with 5-8 years of this experience to include both manual and CNC set up and operation. Must have at least 2 years in a prototype fabrication environment.

  • Certificate or associates degree preferred.
