CITY OF JANESVILLE Public Works Maintenance Worker in JANESVILLE, Wisconsin

JOB REQUIREMENTS: OBJECTIVE: This position, under direct supervision of the Water Supervisor, performs manual, unskilled or semiskilled tasks in a wide variety of Utility maintenance operations. Work involves participating in water and sanitary sewer maintenance activities. The incumbent will also assist any water and sanitary sewer investigations for service complaints. RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to: Water Operator Crew Leader Supervises: N/A Has direct contact with the Water Operator Crew Leader, Water Supervisor, Water Superintendent, Department and Division Heads, employees and co-workers, customers, and the general public. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. 1.Assists in repairing water mains, services, fire hydrants and valves. 2.Assists in tapping new services and valves into water mains. 3.Assists in maintaining and repairing of storm and sanitary sewers. 4.Assists in locating Utility facilities buried underground. 5.Operates valves and fire hydrants and reports any needed repairs. 6.Reports to the Water Operator Crew Leader any vehicle or equipment malfunctions for repair or damage to City facilities. 7.Reports to Water Operator Crew Leader daily assignments completed, work activities and records. 8.Maintains proper daily maintenance of City equipment and vehicles. 9.Operates City Trucks and vehicles (e.g. dump trucks, pickup trucks, end loaders and backhoes) on and off the public roadways. 10.Assists in snowplow operations. 11.Responds to basic citizen operational inquiries or refers to the proper supervisor for response. 12.Performs other special projects and duties as assigned or required during regular and non-business hours, including providing support as a part of any City response to essential or emergency operations. Ability to: 1.Ability to learn and apply new technology. 2.Ability to identify, report and/or repair malfunctioning equipment and/or machinery. 3.Ability to prepare and maintain accurate reports of daily assignments completed. 4.Ability to perform strenuous labor for extended periods of time under varying weather conditions, and to do so in a safe manner. 5.Ability to interact/respond to citizen inquires or guide them to the appropriate service. 6.Ability to operate City vehicles and equipment in a safe manner. 7.Ability to perform work in a safe manner, follow safe work procedures and take necessary safety precautions. 8.Ability to work without direct supervision and within the boundaries of areas of responsibility. 9.Ability to effectively plan, organize and complete the tasks assigned. 10.Ability to work effectively as part of a team. 11.Ability to maintain a positive attitude and professional demeanor at all times; address resident and customer concerns in a helpful, courteous manner. 12.Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with Department and Division Heads, employees, co-workers, customers, and the general public. 13.Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in written form, with supervisors, contractors, utility companies, property owners, government officials, the general public, fellow employees, and City officials. 14.Ability to exercise good judgment and courtesy in maintaining public and employee relations. 15.Ability to work with others in a positive, supportive fashion to solve problems, generate ideas, and accomplish department and City goals. 16.Ability to make decisions in accordance with laws, regulations, and established procedures. 17.Ability to maintain confidential information, possess a high level of integrity, and adopt a professional work ethic. 18.Ability to work a varied schedule including nights and weekends. Skill in: 1.Skill in safely operating a variety of equipment and machinery required by the work. 2.Skill in dealing with the public in responding to complaints or request for information.
