Safety and Training Manager

The Safety and Training Manager is responsible for the overall on-the-street safety performance. The Safety and Training Manager is responsible for instilling in each staff member guiding principles of safety and customer service. In addition, the Safety and Training Manager is responsible for providing training to the staff and ensuring that all the Vehicle Operators and administrative staff are fully trained, proficient in their position duties, and can perform their jobs to help achieve goals of this Contract. The Safety and Training Manager reports to the General Manager and supervises the Training Delivery Lead and the Safety Supervisors.

Duties and responsibilities of the Safety and Training Manager include:

  • Developing the Service Provider’s Overall Training Plan including curricula for all job levels and job families

  • Developing, maintaining, and reporting out training progress in a training matrix at a cadence specified by the MBTA

  • Collecting and analyzing training and retention data to identify additional training needs and revise the Training Plan as appropriate, for each job level and job family

  • Designing, developing, and implementing training programs, including material, activities, double-jacking time, and other industry-leading learning methods

  • Communicate with Managers to ensure staffs are well-trained

  • Participating in regular meetings with the General Manager and other departments to the assure each division is achieving the stated performance goals

  • Works cooperatively with the HR Manager in the onboarding of new staff and retraining of existing staff

  • Lead and conduct regular training for employees as needed, and maintain accurate training files for all personnel

  • Develop and implement the Safety Compliance Plan

  • Gather, compile, and report safety, accident and worker’s compensation statistics as required

  • Investigate and report on all vehicle and workers’ compensation accidents

  • Conduct semi-annual location audits to ensure the location complies with company, MBTA, state, local and federal requirements

  • Administrate all aspects of the Vehicle Audio and Video Data Recorder program and reviewing clips

  • Ensure division in compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental laws

  • Working with the Safety and Training Manager to maintain and expand the Contractor’s Training Plan (or Staff Development Program), including curricula for all job levels within this function

  • Developing, maintaining, and reporting training progress in a training matrix for this function, and collaborating with the Safety and Training Manager to update a consolidated training matrix for the entirety of Contractor staff

  • Training staff in the delivery of high quality service, both via technical skill enhancement or soft skill enhancement, according to the Training Plan

  • Participating in regular meetings with the Safety and Training Manager and other departments to the assure the Contractor is achieving the stated performance goals

  • Lead and conduct regular training for all employees as needed either in a specialist or generalist capacity

Qualifications

Qualifications of the Safety and Training Manager include:

  • Four years’ experience within a safety and training function in public transportation

  • Long-term experience in paratransit industry and training paratransit staff

  • Thorough understanding of all ADA and MBTA requirements

  • Superior critical thinking and decision-making skills

  • Experience effectively managing resources to achieve goals and outcomes

  • Demonstrated self-starter behavior, and ability to work independently to identify and implement initiatives

  • Training certifications are a plus

  • Interpersonal, and diplomacy skills in dealing with employees at all levels of the organization
