Developmental Disabilities Institute Technology Specialist MA - Children's Day Program in Huntington, New York

Overview

Developmental Disabilities Institute, DDI, is one of the largest providers of care to children and adults with Autism, developmental disabilities and other special needs. DDI has been a part of Long Island for over 50 years serving over 1,500 children and adults with Autism, other developmental disabilities and special needs. DDI provides innovative and expansive services to our population through various educational settings, residential services, day habilitation programs and vocational services.

Working in DDI's Childhood Day Services division the Tech Specialist works along side the Behavior Therapists and Assistants as part of the interdisciplinary team. Working in the classroom the Tech Specialist works with children with developmental disabilities on a variety of age appropriate educational goals.

Responsibilities

  • Provides technology instruction to all classrooms as assigned and scheduled. May be required to travel to multiple DDI locations to conduct classes.

  • Provides home and career skills in accordance with State learning standards for family and consumer sciences to all classrooms as assigned and scheduled.

  • Independently develops and implements technology curriculum consistent with the NYS requirements to provide home and career technology skills.

  • Develops and implements student technology assessments consistent with NYS requirements for instruction related to home and career technology skills.

  • Prepares session notes and plans and implements technology sessions for the learning of home and career technology skills according to program policies and procedures.

  • Prepares IEP goals consistent with the Learning Standards.

  • Documents all sessions according to procedures established by the program.

  • Communicates with the parents in the program regarding progress of students. Communications shall be by flyer, newsletter, letter to parents, attendance at parent meetings, etc at intervals prescribed by the program.

  • Attends and successfully completes all required trainings and in-services. Present and teach in-services to as requested.

  • Manages technology material and equipment and ensures that materials and equipment are available as necessary and properly are used.

  • Facilitates and is responsible for displaying student work product throughout the respective classrooms and schools. Expected to lead and manage DDI-related technology projects as requested.

  • Provides instruction to classroom staff and other therapists on technology topics and home and career technology skills materials.

  • Collaborates with the other Therapists (ST, OT, PT, phys Ed, Music, Art) routinely to facilitate cooperative learning and building on other skills.

  • Recommends individualized instruction using technology in collaboration with the Speech Therapist and/or Behavior Specialist.

  • Works with individual students as needed to maintain ratio.

  • Provides a push in service and will not be assigned a specific classroom, unless advised by a supervisor to use a particular location.

  • Complies with policies contained in the Children’s Day Program Handbook for Staff.

  • Assists with bus duty, lunch coverage, committees for building climate/staff morale and graduation and other duties as assigned.

  • Responsible for the oversight and leadership for the Technology Committee for the program and/or site.

    Qualifications

  • MA – Must possess a Master’s Degree and NYS certification in Technology, Special Education, Speech, or a related field.

  • Must be fluent with Smart Boards technology and software, programming a range of student augmentative and alternative communication devices, iTouch, iPad and similar devices, PowerPoint, and instructional technology.

For all positions:

  • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities is preferred.

  • Ability to work with developmentally disabled individuals is required.

  • Must possess good interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

  • Must possess experience in technology-based instruction, and fully versed in using tools and equipment associated with said instruction (systems, devices, computers, etc.)
