The Ambulatory Surgery Nurse’s is responsible for the direct and indirect provision of professional nursing care of the patients in the perioperative setting. The nurse is accountable for ongoing evaluation and documentation of all components of care delivered to customers within the perioperative and outpatient environment utilizing the nursing process.

Supporting the philosophy of the organization.

Following and completing assignments as given by the charge nurse.

Creating and maintaining an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the department.

Preanesthesia nursing history and assessment

Intravenous access

Phlebotomy

12-Lead ECG testing

Sedation/Analgesia: assessment and monitoring

ECG Interpretation

Malignant Hyperthermia

Phase I Postanesthesia

Surgery specific postoperative care, to include assessments, potential

complications, and discharge teaching

Age specific care

Safety and infection control measures

E. Reporting changes in patient’s condition to the appropriate personnel.

F. Ensuring that the ASU working area is maintained in a clean, safe, and sanitary manner.

G. Recording all information correctly and accurately on patient’s chart.

H. Following established universal precautions in the use of gloves, gowns, and/or masks.

I. Ensuring that daily and weekly tasks are completed.

J. Maintains confidentiality according to established policy.

Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

Must possess current acute hospital experience (within past 5 years).

Must possess a current Iowa license as a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse.

Must be certified or willing to certify in BLS, PALS, and ACLS.

Must complete the Dependent Adult/Child Abuse Training.

Dysrhythmia management course is preferred.

Previous PACU experience preferred.

Must possess the ability to function in a team environment.

Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, patients, family members, visitors, and physicians.

Must be able to relay information to appropriate personnel concerning a patient’s condition.

Must have patience, tact, and a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as willingness to handle difficult situations.
