The Role

The Digital Engineer is a key member of the RFID hardware team. The most suitable candidate will demonstrate the ability to create a paper design and take it through to production. Design experience with embedded microprocessor and microcontroller-based systems is essential, as is a working knowledge of high-speed printed circuit design. Practical design experience with battery-operated systems, analog circuits and power minimization techniques will be highly valued.

This role often goes beyond digital design and requires a good and often detailed understanding of how firmware and hardware interact to control a system. This needs to be coupled with a good grasp of RF design, modern radios and antennas in order to efficiently collaborate with the various teams and contribute meaningfully. Must be creative, proactive, passionate about the details, organized, and possess good interpersonal skills. The position is based in Germantown, MD, with occasional travel to national and international locations.

Responsibilities

  • Essential Functions

  • Strong participation in architecture and platform development

  • Design of digital control systems for RFID and various other products from start to finish

  • Test and optimization of these circuits at board level and product level to ensure product requirements are fulfilled

  • Design of microprocessor and other circuits and capture in CAD tools. Provide layout mentorship to PCB designer

  • Simulation at board and system level using various tools to balance trade-offs and ensure a solid product design

  • Regulatory testing for non-RF requirements, debug and standards support

  • Bench prototyping of test circuits and soldering and rework as required for testing circuit boards

  • Manufacturing and multi-functional team interaction and support for project completion

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong teammate and communicator

  • Broad knowledge of modern digital systems

  • Industry experience and appreciation of a competitive landscape is a plus

  • Specialist in designing with embedded ARM-based microprocessors and/or microcontrollers

  • Experience with the constraints imposed by battery operated systems

  • Experience with battery charging circuits, especially Li-ion cells, is a plus

  • Experienced with a variety of common digital interfaces at the PHY level, including RS232, USB, I2C, SPI, Ethernet, SDIO, etc.

  • Experience with interfacing to various sensors, e.g. for temperature, acceleration, RF power, etc.

  • Specialist in fault analysis and resolution at system and board level

  • Specialist in the use of test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, etc.

  • Understanding of PCB design from capture to layout - Cadence knowledge is a plus

  • Working knowledge of software and the software development process

  • An appreciation for tasks that are best implemented in hardware, as opposed to software

  • Knowledgable of soldering surface mount components and rework of boards containing surface mount components is essential

  • Basic understanding of PCB simulation software, e.g. Cadence Sigrity SI or similar

  • Working knowledge and RF techniques and the constraints of RF circuits

  • Understands digital radios and communications

  • Working knowledge of WiFi and BT

Qualifications

  • Requires Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering

  • Masters in EE preferred

  • 5+ years’ work experience required as Digital/Electrical engineer with Bachelor’s degree in EE, 4+ years’ work experience required as an Digital/Electrical engineer with Master’s degree in EE.

  • Demonstrated success in multiple product designs in a Digital/Electrical capacity
