Job Description:

This is work providing basic care of animals and animal facilities by completing primarily simple and routine animal care-taking and cage wash duties as directed by the Operations Manager or their designee, which may occur up to 50% of the time of overall job duties and responsibilities. All actions are completed by strictly and consistently following applicable ACS SOPs including safety procedures and policies. Reports any suspected or actual deviations to SOP’s or non-routine situations immediately to the Operations Manager or their designee.

Responsible for carrying out the Animal Care Services' (ACS) directives and SOPs as governed by the Animal Welfare Act and all applicable rules and regulations. Provides basic animal husbandry to a variety of species being used for biomedical research. This includes housing animals, cleaning cages, feeding, watering, weighing animals and restraining animals. Identifies incoming animals and houses according to specific requirements: maintains identification of animals using cage cards, tags, collars.

Observes and reports animals for signs of illness, injury, and physical or behavioral changes. Changes cages transferring animals from soiled to clean enclosures ensuring to maintain individual animal identity; feeds and water animals according to ACS SOP’s and veterinary orders: documents all activities performed on appropriate logs. Under supervision, performs euthanasia using carbon dioxide with approved alternate secondary method. Observes, documents, and reports changes in environmental parameters outside acceptable ranges, e.g. temperature, humidity, lighting, etc. Restrains and handles animals for treatment.

Sanitizes equipment and animal holding facilities; collects and delivers samples for assessment of sanitizing efficacy to our Diagnostic Lab. Ensures housing and environmental compliance with the "NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Maintains supply stock in all assigned rooms and common areas for daily use of investigative staff.

May be assigned to cage wash operations and will perform routine duties associated with cage sanitation and preparation for reuse in a research setting including cage maintenance, monitoring equipment for proper functioning and maintaining sanitary conditions. Operates washers and ensures that cage washing and related equipment are in proper working order by cleaning, and preventive maintenance. Will perform routine start-up and shut down procedures of cage wash operations. Operates autoclave to sterilize or decontaminate caging equipment Will assist in receiving and rotating feed and supplies. Transports caging supplies between animal rooms and cage wash rooms. Will sanitize cage washing rooms and other support areas, such as hallways and storage rooms. May be asked to provide guidance, instruction and direction to cage wash trainees following directives provided by facility supervisor/manager.

Required to keep up to date on SOP’s in Policy Manger and input their time worked using facility computers or assigned equipment during normal working hours. Ensure that Leave Request, OT, Weekend Forms are submitted timely to area supervisor/manager.

Minimum Requirements:

Completion of the ninth grade and one year of appropriate experience; or a high school diploma

Preferred Qualifications:

Prefer HS degree or higher degree.

Experience with research animal care at a research institution or other appropriate environment.

Special Instructions to Applicants:

Work hours are Monday - Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, with rotating weekends every four weeks.
