UPMC Patient Care Technician in Erie, Pennsylvania

UPMC Hamot located in Erie, PA, is hiring multiple Temporary Patient Care Technicians to help support our Resource Unit during this unprecedented time. Schedule flexibility is needed.

As a Temporary Patient Care Technician, you’ll provide routine patient care and support the department services in accordance with established policies and procedures, and as directed by the nurse or physician to assure that the highest degree of quality patient care can be maintained at all times. You must routinely perform the UPMC nursing core patient care responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections and Foley care) AND at least 4 of the following hospital identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal.

Temporary assignments last up to 180 days but can lead to ongoing employment.

As a member of the Resource Pool, you’ll be eligible for a competitive rate of pay. Minimum starting rate is $13.50. Paid training will be provided as needed.

All positions will require successful completion of a criminal background check, any required clearances, and a pre-employment physical and drug screen as part of UPMC’s standard hiring process. If your academic institution has these documents on record, your onboarding may be expedited.

Responsibilities :

  • Provides patient careincluding assisting with patient procedures and activities of dailyliving. Assists with physical, respiratory and cardiopulmonary therapies.Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes inpatient status.

  • Performs the UPMC nursingcore nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vitalsigns, I&O, specimen collections and Foley care) AND at least four ofthe following BU identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simpledressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan,straight catheter, or IV catheter removal.

  • Assures equipmentmalfunctions are reported to the appropriate department. Establishesappropriate and effective communication with other departments. Establishesprofessional and respectful interpersonal relationships. Contributes tothe universal unit activities including, but not limited to, responding tocall lights and telephones, passing meal trays and transporting patients.

  • Constructively receivesfeedback and direction. Identifies and communicates learning needs to theunit director. Takes action to improve knowledge, skills and performance.Requests assistance in planning and prioritizing activities as needed.Participates in self-review as requested by the unit director.

  • Provides instruction topatients and their families under the direction of the RN. May apply,monitor and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospitalprotocol.

  • Demonstrates the ability tocommunicate clearly and effectively with all members of the health careteam. Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violenceand impairment in the health professions. Cares for patients and self bysupporting safety in the workplace. Develops and maintains productiveworking relationships internally and externally by demonstratingaccountability for actions, enthusiasm, motivation and commitment topatients and colleagues.

  • Strictly adheres to allpolicies and procedures relative to patient care and hospital relatedinformation. Complies with safety policies and procedures includingstandard precautions.

  • Suggests and supportschanges within the department. Assumes responsibility for assignment andviews problems as challenges. Demonstrates awareness of behavior on theefficient functioning of the department. Supports department basedprojects and quality initiatives.

  • Documents in the medicalrecord according to established procedures. Performs assigned work in atimely and productive manner. Completes department clerical functions asneeded.



  • High school diploma orequivalent.

  • Nursing student who hascompleted at least one clinical rotation in nursing school OR a registerednurse who has a RN license but prefers not to work as a nurse

  • Nursing students who havecompleted clinical orientation to UPMC Hamot strongly preferred

  • Successful completion ofbasic information system training.

  • Ability to effectivelycommunicate both orally and in writing.

  • Access to medications islimited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

· CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

· Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
