Merck Clean Utilities Technician - 2nd shift in Durham, North Carolina

Job Description

Our Engineers support internal and external manufacturing operations remain operational, continuously improve and innovate. With our extensive range of facilities and environments, our Engineers have opportunities across many diverse areas including Biological, Chemical, Automation, Capital Projects, Maintenance, Safety, Process Development, Technical Services, Utilities and Validation.

The Technician, Clean Utilities Operations is accountable for providing instrumentation and controls support to Plant Engineering.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Works within a team to perform calibration, maintenance and troubleshooting activities. Completes complex calibrations, resolves deviations and evaluates instrument performance.

  • Provides guidance and direction to other instrumentation technicians.

  • Develops standard operating procedures, engineering change request, preventative maintenance plans/calibration procedures, task lists, etc.as required.

  • Follows proper procedures for maintaining production equipment in a clean room environment.

  • Accountable for written documentation of activities.

  • Actively promotes, participates and embraces an empowered team culture including significant interaction with Production, Technical Operations, Quality and other support groups.

Education Minimum Requirement

  • High School diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of industrial maintenance experience or two (2) year technical degree with one (1) years of maintenance experience or equivalent

Required Experience and Skills

  • Installation, testing, calibration, adjustment, maintenance, repair and troubleshooting of engineering, production, and lab instrumentation

  • Follow instructions for completion of job tasks

  • Operate and maintain applicable purified water systems (i.e., Pre-treatment, Reverse Osmosis, Water For Injection, clean steam generators)

  • Efficient and safe calibration and repair of instrumentation using Hazardous Energy Control Procedures

  • Compliance with current good manufacturing procedures(cGMP), safety and environmental requirements/regulations/guidelines

  • Effective communication both written and verbal

  • Ensure maintenance records (i.e., Work Orders, PMs and Calibrations) are maintained and completed on-time

  • Maintain and operate the waste and chemical treatment processes

  • Position requires aseptic gowning during performance of job duties

  • Required to support an on-call schedule to include days, nights and weekends on a rotational basis with other team members

  • Effective calibration/troubleshooting skills

  • Ability to communicate and work in a highly effective team environment

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and advance several tasks in parallel

  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude

  • Proficient in the use of general hand and power tools, instruments and testing apparatus common to the electronic and instrumentation fields

  • Ability to read P&ID's, electrical drawings, blueprints, etc and use DeltaV and PI

  • Ability to work with and troubleshoot computer control equipment, including Programmable Logic Controllers and Distributed Control Systems

  • Prepares technical documentation (preventative Maintenance procedures) on as needed basis

  • Participates in the establishment and improvement of new and existing process support equipment

  • Provides technical specifications and information to Quality, Manufacturing, Process-Project Engineers and other company Manufacturing Division requestors

  • Maintains Utility equipment by developing/performing PM’s installing new equipment, completing validation protocols, documenting work using a computerized maintenance management systems and other duties as requested by the Utility Maintenance Manager

  • Performs preventative maintenance inspections and prepares inspection reports concerning operations of equipment and mechanical condition of equipment

  • Efficient and safe maintenance and repair of equipment using Hazardous Energy Control Procedures

  • The ability to follow complex instructions and use Manufacturing Division business systems (SAP, ADP eTime, etc.)

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and advance several tasks in parallel

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift fifty (50), climb ladders and stairs, work on platforms and equipment above floor level. Walking, bending, crawling, stooping is required

  • Required to wear personal protective equipment including safety glasses, safety shoes, earplugs, gloves, hard hats, safety harnesses,etc.

The successful candidate for this position will work a Monday - Friday 8 hour 2nd shift schedule (2:00 pm to 10:30 pm).
