KBR Optical Engineer/Physicist in Dayton, Ohio
At KBR, We Deliver by transforming science into new possibilities for our customers. Be part of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and researchers to discover and develop new and relevant military-critical electronics to maintain our nation’s air, space, and cyber superiority.
This position is located at the Air Force Research Laboratory Sensors Directorate, Aerospace Components and Subsystems Tech Division, Optoelectronics Technology Branch. The Optoelectronic Technology Branch performs basic and applied research to discover and develop novel optoelectronic, laser, and power electronic concepts through the exploitation of structure-property interactions to ensure continued USAF sensor and countermeasure technology dominance.
The primary task will be generating, manipulating, and measuring the polarization state of light (full Stokes polarimetry) using both coherent and incoherent sources of light. Most of the experiments will be carried out in the infrared (wavelengths from 1 to 10μm), but some experiments may include visible or ultraviolet light. Experience working in many wavelength ranges is desired. This position requires extensive hands-on experience with lasers of various types (solid state, VCSEL, gas, etc.) and in various operating modes (continuous wave, pulsed, mode-locked, etc.). The main applications require measurements on the microsecond time scale or faster. Some measurements will be performed on samples in cryogenic chambers requiring fiber coupling. Electrical measurements and stimulation of samples will be made in conjunction with optical excitation, so a knowledge of instrument interfacing, timing, and control of equipment is essential.
The selected candidate will design, assemble, and operate optical and electrical components for the production and measurement of the polarization state of light from the UV to the far infrared and use polarization of light to encode, transmit, and decode information in a basic communication system. The selected candidate will Identify or distinguish materials by measuring their Mueller matrices with laser pulses in various polarization states for the development of polarimetric LiDAR systems.
The selected candidate will design, assemble, and operate optical and electrical components for the production and measurement of the polarization state of light in the far infrared.
Masters in Physics, optical sciences, electrical engineering, or related disciplines. PhD preferred.
US citizenship is required for this position.
