Hologic Senior Mechanical Engineer in Danbury, Connecticut

The Senior Mechanical Engineer on the R&D Team leads the design and development of new innovative solutions to meet or exceed our customers’ needs. The Engineer is responsible for a wide range of product design activities including the design concept, detailed design, component selection, implementation and testing of electro-mechanical systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent may be asked to perform other function-related activities in addition to the below mentioned responsibilities as reasonably required by business needs.

  • Design and develop complex electro-mechanical devices and systems for mammography, breast biopsy, specimen radiography and related products.

  • Support sustaining projects, which involve replacement or redesign for obsolete components, product improvement features, cost reduction, manufacturing support, and field complaints.

  • Follow SOPs and Best Practice guidelines.

  • Design multiple fabrication and material methods, e.g., injection molding, castings, machined parts, and sheet metal.

  • Provide tolerance studies, apply GD&T, stress analysis studies, develop reliability testing procedures and fixtures, and generate appropriate design verification reports.

  • Prepare assembly and detailed drawings.

  • Participate in the manufacture or building of prototype product or system.

  • Position will use SolidWorks for modeling parts, assemblies, and drawings, plus SolidWorks PDM for CAD data management.

  • Will use an electronic product data management system (AGILE preferred) for engineering change management.

  • Engage and coordinate with cross-functional team members as needed.

  • Provide technical leadership to project managers, engineers, and research personnel to clarify and resolve problems and develop designs.

  • Develop hardware specifications.

  • Participate in scheduled department meetings to report progress of overall project or portion of project; prepare and provide design presentations.

  • Analyze test data and reports to determine if design meets functional and performance specifications.

  • Monitor progress and status of all assigned projects and report progress and problems to management on a timely basis.

  • Ensure that design implementation, test and maintenance methods/processes are developed and executed in a manner which supports all company quality standards.

  • Compile technical data for Design History Files per FDA requirements.

  • Proficient with Windows Explorer, MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint.



  • B.S. Degree Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, MS preferred

  • Languages required for the position (Desirable): English.


  • 5+ years of experience in Electro-Mechanical product development

  • 3+ years of SolidWorks 3D modeling and 2D drafting.

  • Exceptional knowledge of fabrication methods (DFM) commonly used at Hologic. Machined and sheet metal parts are most common. Molded part design is a plus, as well as metal casting design.

  • Experience with medical products is a bonus.

  • Responds to constructive feedback positively and professionally (design reviews)


  • Proficiency with load and stress analysis, tolerancing, and GD&T.

  • Must have good hands-on skills, the candidate will work on much of what they design.

  • Fast learning curve.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Strong problem-solving ability.

  • Able to effectively multitask.

  • Proactive and self-starter.
