The Senior Controller position is a strategic business partner role for BAL that will have direct collaboration with senior leaders of the firm, where acting with agility (not bureaucracy), for the needs of clients takes priority. This role requires a confident and experienced professional services finance and accounting, results-driven strategic thinker who will bring innovation, best practices, technical savvy, and leadership experience to build on the success, culture, expanding business lines, and hunger for meeting the complex needs of the real families and people behind the label “Client.”
The Senior Controller is responsible for directing the multi-office financial accounting and financial planning & analysis functions for BAL, recommending enhancements, and implementing business processes that will improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the accounting function. The incumbent will provide day to day guidance on a pro-active basis to all functions within the Finance/Accounting department to ensure business and process issues are handled timely and effectively to positively impact the Firm’s results. Responsibilities include management and development of the financial accounting team, preparation of accurate and timely financial statements, creation of metrics/modeling, budgeting, financial forecasting and analyses, development of presentations for senior leadership, implementation and management of internal controls, and oversight of tax reporting.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES (Under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer):
Oversee and direct the day-to-day accounting operations, including financial statement preparation and reporting, general ledger, internal controls, payroll, and financial planning & analysis. Ensure timely and accurate reporting of financial data and operational results to partners and senior leaders.
Direct the month-end close and preparation of all related month, quarter, and year-end financial statements and financial presentations, including setting priorities for timely and accurate statements & analyses.
Supervise the Finance and Accounting teams and ensure proper training is available. Solicit feedback on Finance department performance and conduct ongoing reviews of finance department staff; mentoring and developing a high performing team within the Firm’s culture.
Ensure compliance with proper accounting procedures and controls and establish/maintain appropriate quality control review procedures for all accounting operations throughout the Firm.
Partner closely with the Director of Client Accounting in matters that impact the financial statements and operations.
Manage banking relationships, including cash forecasting, funding, and debt compliance.
Administer partner capital accounts, including, but not limited to draws, distributions, and capital and income allocation.
Oversight and responsibility for payroll activities, compliance, and processing for multiple states.
Manage annual external reviews/audits of the Firm’s financial statements.
Responsible for the preparation of federal, state, local tax returns, including individual partner K-1’s, with an external accounting firm.
Manage annual filings for corporate income tax, state/franchise tax, property tax, and other regulatory filings as necessary.
Lead the strategic financial planning for annual operating and capital budget process, short and long-range financial goals, forecasting, and various analyses.
Assess and evaluate the financial performance of the organization concerning long-term operational goals, budgets, and forecasts.
Develop metrics and modeling for various profitability and productivity analyses.
Establish and ensure compliance with proper accounting procedures and controls throughout the Firm. Establish/maintain appropriate internal controls to mitigate risk and ensure accuracy for all accounting operations throughout the Firm.
Continually evaluate and optimize accounting processes, striving to deliver process automation, improved accuracy, and greater customer service.
Identify opportunities for profitability improvement, cost control and reduction, revenue enhancement, and operational improvements.
Develop ad hoc analysis of potential new offices, partner acquisitions, and new business opportunities.
Review liability and property insurance coverages, recommend changes as appropriate, and ensure all policies are renewed promptly.
Collaborate with the CFO and CIO to ensure that the financial software meets the needs of the Firm’s short and long-range goals.
SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES (Under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer):
Financial and statistical surveys, special projects, and ad hoc analyses as required.

Minimum Education Level:
Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting is required.
MBA is desirable; CPA is a plus.
10+ years of progressive responsibility in accounting and finance is required.
8+ years of managerial experience is required.
Experience in a Professional Services environment is required.
Law firm experience is a plus.
Experience with Aderant software is a plus.
Experience with system integration and implementations is a plus.

Strong project management skills with experience in successful project planning, testing, implementation, and review.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build strong relationships across all levels of the organization.
Significant experience developing and monitoring internal controls and accounting procedures.
Ability to use sound judgment, discretion, and professional integrity.
Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and deal tactfully with sensitive information.
Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office applications, with expertise in Excel and PowerPoint.
