Sr. Bioinformatics Scientist - RI IGM Wagner

The Institute for Genomic Medicine (IGM) at Nationwide Children’s Hospital is creating a future that integrates genomics into the everyday practice of pediatrics. Led by a team of internationally renowned genomic medicine scientists, the IGM is housed in the campus’ newest research building, spanning 25,000 square feet of laboratory and office space in a highly interactive setting. The Wagner Lab at IGM is looking for a senior bioinformatics scientist to lead the characterization of genomic knowledge and its application to tertiary analysis of genomic variation. Research efforts will include applying structured genomic knowledge to procedurally match, aggregate, and prioritize clinical evidence associated with molecular variation detected in the IGM sequencing analysis pipelines. The goal of this research is to create semantically rich and computable knowledge amenable to machine learning and clinical decision support algorithms.

  • Cross-domain information modeling in interdisciplinary teams between multiple stakeholders, including the ClinGen Data Platform team and the VICC Meta-Knowledgebase team

  • Leading developer teams to implement the above knowledge models and develop informatics tools for tertiary analysis

  • Working with clinical stakeholders and developers at IGM to build platforms compatible with genomic knowledge standards from the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health and clinical standards organizations (e.g. AMP/ASCO/CAP cancer variant classification criteria)

  • Researching methodologies for applying structured genomic knowledge for scalable tertiary analysis and genome interpretation

  • Writing scientific manuscripts on above activities and assisting in grant writing

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Education:

  • PhD in relevant discipline (e.g. genetics, bioinformatics, computer science)

Experience:

  • 2+ years of postdoctoral experience in bioinformatics and tertiary analysis

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Experience in information & data modeling

  • Knowledge and experience with following domains desirable: Biomedical ontologies, Genomic knowledge resources, Python programming language, Distributed version control systems (e.g. git + GitHub), Collaborative requirements gathering, Product development
